I have full intentions of keeping myself healthy through beneficial food consumption. But with all the hassles I have to put up with from day to day before going to work limits me from doing so. Before going off to work I have always planned to bring along some healthy meals with me, the only problem is I can’t squeeze it much to my schedule, taking such important aspects for granted.
When I get to work I have no other option but to opt for foods that are readily available from vending machines or crown up inside fast food joints. And this is actually the normal occurrence on my food habits.
There are some individuals who suffer the same routine as mine, and they are pretty disappointed that a full work schedule and other preoccupations has brought negative effects to dieting habits. What is lacking? I know that most readers would agree when I say that discipline is the prime one. It is not enough to turn my eating habits with pre-packaged meals.
It is not a solution to just surrender and give in to this kind of eating routine. There are some simple adjustments that would have to be faced when it comes to food choices.
A personal outlook was shared by a men’s health magazine editor that has long since experienced the same eating dilemma. He suggests some methods and a couple of switches to incorporate in choosing our food intake.
Some diet books may imply and advice that people should have control on almost all of their food consumption. But the said editor has explained that such method could only result in diet failures. Moreover, he suggests that individuals need not deprive themselves of their favorite food but instead find a more appropriate alternative to suffice weight management along with satisfaction.
Admittedly, most of us spend more of our budget o eating out. So the best way to improve our weight management is to alter our favored foods like that of a burrito from Taco Bell instead of a hundred caloric content of Chipotle. Such examples is what the editor is implying.
The editor has dedicated much time on knowing nutrition facts from our frequent fast food choices but it is no surprise that most companies would not participate in such with their facts.
There is an alarming fact that most food serving companies have been keeping their formulation of ingredients undisclosed or misleading consumers of what they really contain.
From the simple packing up one’s lunch at home, we don’t expect much that these individuals would have any at all for breaking down information on what food companies are serving them. This is the concept of this article, to supply pointers that would help reduce caloric intake from their daily food consumption.
Tips for a Leaner Lunch:
A simple order of sandwich without much extras on the side like that of cheese and extra patties can save an individual with at least 6 grams of fat on their food choices.
Eliminate caloric and fat gain by ordering a normal serving size for your taco salad. Replacing cheese and sauces with chunky salsa could also effect limited caloric and fat intake.
A minimum of 100 calories is saved when one would prefer a thin crust pizza than the other. Limited toppings could also help cutback such caloric intake.
When going out for a foot-long order of sandwich why not opt for a shorter one only doubling the meat. In such manner, one could lessen their budget strain and caloric count.
Preferring salad over fries is also beneficial. Going for green salads would supply less calories than that of with small servings of fries.
It is just a matter or making a healthier choice of food that concludes a secret diary for low caloric contents. One could still enjoy their favorite meal at their preferred place with more consciousness of their caloric intake.
There are some fast food restaurants that could satisfy an individual’s food craving but still working on their weight management. With as simple as lessening cheese and dressing choices could pretty much result beneficially. Going for smaller orders of sandwiches than long offered ones is also desirable.
Enjoying your meal is important. And eating up is not a crime. When ordering, as those food crews offers you a serving of fries, smile and just say no. Set a go green trend.

As a consumer, you probably realize how helpful product reviews are. You wouldn’t want to be duped especially in these days of economic turmoil when almost everyone is going through some form of financial struggle.
As a dieter, you need to be particularly cautious when choosing a weight loss product because not only should you spend wisely, but more importantly, you must always safeguard your health. The weight loss industry, after all, is known for being relentlessly profit-oriented regardless of whether the products that come out of it is beneficial to people or not.
Advancements in science and weight loss technology have resulted in the creation of numerous weight loss supplements, programs or systems, which all claim to be the best in the industry. Although there are some that actually deliver what they promise, many rely on advertising hype. Half-truths and outright lies are a major part of the business strategies of some unscrupulous manufacturers. For this reason, weight loss supplement reviews are extremely valuable.
The objective of weight loss supplement reviews is to distinguish the quality products from inferior and questionable ones. It does this by specifically pointing out the lies and the truths that manufacturers say about their products. The information contained in a weight loss supplement review is meant to protect the consumers from being victimized by greedy manufacturers.
Which weight loss supplement should it be?
A good way to get started in choosing the right weight loss supplement is by finding out what’s currently popular. While it does not mean that it’s the best, it at least gives you an idea of what works for others.
It is important that you secure a list of the Food and Drug Administration’s list of harmful ingredients and use it when evaluating the effectiveness and safety of weight loss supplements. Always take a look at the list of ingredients included in product’s formula either on the label or on the product website. Aside from finding out if a supplement contains ineffective or harmful ingredients, you can also find out if it has ingredients which you may be allergic to.
Are prescription weight loss supplements for you?
Prescription drugs are basically for very obese people or for those who have specific needs that cannot be met by over-the-counter weight loss supplements. These drugs have been tested and approved by the Food and Drug Administration and are more potent than over-the-counter products. Majority of the people who have taken prescription weight loss drugs report that they have lost as much as much as 10% of their weight. People with healthy body mass indexes may also take these weight loss drugs as long as they are cleared by their doctors to take them.
No prescription needed
Over-the-counter weight loss supplements can actually be more dangerous than prescription drugs as their use is not regulated. There are people who might misuse them and end up being sick. Using a variety of such supplements alongside each other in an attempt to speed up the weight loss process for instance, may overwork the system. When this happens, the body becomes weaker and is unable to defend itself against threats that may destroy it.
Unproven claims
Just because a supplement is labelled “herbal” or “natural” means it’s healthy and safe. There are many herbal ingredients that cause severe side-effects. Ephedra for one, an extract taken from the Chinese herb Ma Huang, is considered a highly dangerous substance. It has been linked to heart attacks and strokes, just to name a few. To protect yourself, always read the ingredients of any formula that you plan to take. If a product doesn’t have an ingredient list, don’t even consider it.
Protection
Before you buy any weight loss supplement, do some research. Check if any product reviews have been done on it. These articles will give you a pretty good idea about what others think about the product as well as what it contains and how it’s supposed to work. Be wary of products that describe themselves with words such as “miraculous”, “secret”, “exotic”, “breakthrough” and “guaranteed”.
If you have any experience, good or bad, to share with others about any weight loss supplement you have tried, why not write a weight loss supplement review? Evaluate the product and explain to others why it does or doesn’t work. The information you have will help them make wise choices and at the same time keep them protected from unscrupulous manufacturers who take advantage of clueless and unsuspecting dieters.

Superfoods is a coined word that has recently been added to our language. This refers to certain foods that provide numerous benefits to our health such as the promotion of healthy cholesterol levels and antioxidant support for the body. These foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, nutrients, essential fatty acids, fiber and other healthful substances. With all these great things superfoods have to offer, why is it that they have only been noticed this past decade?
It can be attributed indirectly to the ever-increasing cases of obesity-related diseases. Statistics from the American Obesity Association (AOA) show that approximately 127 million adult Americans are overweight, 60 million are obese, and 9 million are severely obese. Furthermore, according to the AOA an obese person has an increased risk of illness for about 30 serious medical conditions. This alarming news has made many Americans aware of the need to make lifestyle changes such as how they live, eat and take care of their bodies. The search for the best foods to include in the diet was borne out of this downward trend in the health condition of America as a whole.
The following is a list of some of the most nutritious of the superfoods and the benefits they offer:
Berries: Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, and cranberries have a high fiber content plus nutrients, vitamins, and hundreds of other healthful compounds. They have powerful antioxidant properties that boost the immune system thereby helping the body be well protected from disease making them an essential part of a healthy diet.
Citrus fruits: Citrus fruits are known for being excellent sources of vitamin C, however they have so much more to offer. They contain flavonoids which provide antioxidant support as well as fiber, folic acid and potassium. The more popular citrus fruits include oranges, lemons and limes.
Green leafy vegetables: All of us know this one. We have always been taught as kids that green leafy vegetables are highly nutritious but we were never told that aside from vitamins green leafy also contain calcium, fiber, potassium and carotenoids which are the pigments found in plants that are rich in antioxidants. Some examples include spinach, kale, endive, romaine, and broccoli.
Legumes: These vegetables are a great source of fiber and protein and examples of which include lentils, beans and peas. Legumes promote healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. These vegetables may be used in salads, soups, salads, spreads or as a side dish.
Omega-3 fish: Omega-3 fatty acids are used to manufacture the cell wall of cells in the body. They can be found in cold water fish such as tuna, salmon, sardines, and mackerel. These beneficial fatty acids are known to reduce the risk of heart disease and at the same time aid in the maintenance of the body’s reproductive, nervous and immune systems.
Soy: Soy is an excellent source of protein and is rich in isoflavones which are potent antioxidants that may help in lowering the risk of heart disease by encouraging healthy cholesterol levels in the body. Soy comes in many forms such as soy milk, miso (soybean paste), tempeh (soybean cake), tofu or plain edamame (soy beans).
Tea: Valued for thousands of years as a medicinal beverage, tea contains flavonoids which support the body’s immune system and promote overall good health.
Tomato: This fruit, which many think of as a vegetable, is packed with nutrients. It is rich in lycopene, a plant pigment that neutralizes free radicals which can cause serious damage to healthy cells in the body. Free radicals have been linked to age-related illnesses, cancer and heart disease.
Walnut: Nuts and seeds such as hazelnuts, cashews, almonds, brazil nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds contain heart-healthy fatty acids which have been shown to promote healthy cholesterol levels. However, walnuts are especially loaded with plant-based Omega-3 fatty acids. These Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) aid in healthy digestion and support cardiovascular and immune health.

When you visit a fruit stand or a vegetable stall and see all the healthy looking produce, it’s hard to imagine that they actually contain insecticides, pesticides and fumigants. Unfortunately, not all of them are organically grown. When you take a bite into a traditionally grown fruit which is loaded with toxic substances, your body has to deal with removing all that unwelcome stuff. If you consume foods that contain these same poisons everyday, the repeated work of detoxifying can take its toll on your liver and kidneys. Your body should be able to handle this if it is fed with organic food, for most Americans however, this is not the case.
It is estimated that majority of Americans consume 13 to 20 different pesticides, insecticides or fumigants daily. Particularly at risk are children and pregnant women. The following is a list of some of the pesticides used on fresh produce and their side effects:
1. Insecticides such as orthene, dursban and thiodan can cause headaches, excessive tearing and salivation, muscle twitching, nausea, diarrhea, possible seizures
2. Fungicides such as captan, azoxystrobin and mancozeb can irritate the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
3. Herbicides such as mecoprop and 2,4 ?D Barrage can increase bizarre or aggressive behavior, irritate mucous membranes and skin, can cause headaches, confusion, vomiting and diarrhea.
4. Iprodione can cause cancer in both humans and animals.
5. Phosmet, a carcinogen, can damage the reproductive system and also interferes with hormones.
6. Benomyl and carbaryl, known carcinogens, can cause birth defects; it can damage the nervous system and the brain; can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
7. Hexchlorocyclohexane high exposure can cause blood disorders, dizziness, headaches, seizures and can affect hormones.
8. Paraquat can cause headaches, cracked hands, and burning sensations in the mouth, throat and chest; can make one feel giddy or lethargic, feverish
9. Azinphos can interfere with hormones.
The above is just a partial list of the toxic substances used in farms all over America. Continuous exposure to these through the regular consumption of traditionally grown foods, can cause great harm to your health.
Unfortunately poultry and meat products also contain toxic substances. In some farms, cattle, pigs and chicken are given antibiotics. Being confined in a building makes these animals more prone to diseases thus the necessity for such medication. When people who eat products from these farms take antibiotics to fight infection, they will find that they have become resistant to these medications themselves.
Aside from antibiotics, cattle are also given hormones to fatten them up. The problem with this is that when humans consume meat from hormone fattened cows, they also fatten up. In Europe, cattle is not allowed to be given the hormone rBGH. The bad news is that in the US hormones are used in approximately 90% of livestock.
There is also the debate about how the presence of hormones in food may be responsible for occurrence of early puberty in young girls. Dr.Samuel Epstein, professor of occupational and environmental medicine at the university of Illinois Medical Center and founder of Cancer Prevention Coalition, explains that because children normally have low sex hormones, even a small increase can produce harmful effects.
We are constantly exposed to toxins. These substances are present in the water we drink, the food we eat, and the water we drink. We need to do something to reduce the level of toxins that enter our bodies and going organic is the answer. Just imagine how much healthier you would feel without all that poison circulating in your system.
It is your responsibility to educate yourself when it comes to matters that affect your health and your family’s health. If you are armed with the right knowledge, you can make informed decisions and you can start get started by eating only organic foods from now on.

When people decide to go on a diet to lose weight, one of the first things they cross out of their food list are carbohydrates. Many people have this impression that carbohydrates make them fat. While it is true that too much of it may cause one to gain weight particularly if one lives a sedentary lifestyle, carbohydrates are really not the enemy. These organic compounds are the body’s main source of energy making them a very important part of a healthy diet.
Carbohydrates are one of the three main food nutrients, with the two others being proteins and fats. There are two categories of carbohydrates simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates such as fruit sugar (fructose), milk sugar (lactose) and table sugar (sucrose) are easily digested and converted into glucose or blood sugar making them a readily available source of energy for the body.
Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, take longer to digest. The pace at which the body breaks down the food and converts it into glucose is much slower thus providing the body with a steady supply of energy. Complex carbohydrates are foods that are often high in fiber, vitamins and minerals such as vegetables, legumes and whole grains. It is the high-fiber content of these foods that slows down the process of converting carbohydrates into glucose. Another effect of fiber is that it helps normalize blood glucose levels because it takes a long time to leave the stomach and because of this, the absorption of glucose from a meal is delayed.
What then is the implication of all these on dieting? It may please a lot of people to know that omitting pasta and bread from your diet is not really necessary. What is more important is to practice moderation. Eating too much carbohydrates, whether simple or complex, translates to consuming a lot of calories because, after all, a calorie is a calorie. Whatever food you are getting your excess calories from, if you consume large amounts of it, the end result is stored fat which in turn causes you to gain weight.
Instead of loading up on starchy carbohydrates, eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. These foods are rich in fiber and phytonutrients which are plant compounds that contain a lot of antioxidants. Phytonutrients may help the body fight against disease.
When it comes to rice, choose brown instead of white. As for breads and pastas, go for whole grain. Try other less familiar grains as well such as millet, teff, quinoa and bulgur for your salads and side dishes.
If you can, try to stop eating pastries, cookies, crackers and other foods that are prepared using white flour and refined sugars altogether. These highly processed foods are not only loaded with calories, but they actually have very little nutritional value.

Weight loss products are backed up by various theories to explain why they are formulated as such. Some make sense while others border on the absurd. Scientist have started to take a look at some of these.
One of the newer areas of weight gain research focuses on the theory that the type of bacteria that is predominant in the gut accounts for one’s ability to lose weight.
The moment you are born, trillions of microorganisms invade your gut. By the time you reach the age of two, these microorganisms are almost complete and by then are performing various functions in bodily processes such as digestion and vitamin production. There are some who believe that these microscopic organisms play a significant role in weight loss.
There are two different types of bacteria that can be found in your digestive system bacteroidetes and firmicutes. These organisms perform several functions and one of these is the extraction of calories from the food you eat. Scientists are trying to find the reason why some people have a stronger tendency to gain weight than others and one possibility they are trying to explore has to do with the type of bacteria that is predominant in the digestive system.
Studies were done recently on mice and humans. The results from these studies showed that those with more fimicutes in their digestive tracts extracted significantly more calories from the same amount of food than those with more bacteroidetes. What this means is that if two different people with more or less the same weight ate the same amount of a certain food, the one with more firmicutes in his or her gut would consume more calories.
In one study, twelve obese people followed a fixed predetermined diet for twelve months and their individual progress was tracked by researchers throughout this period. Before they started on the diet, their gut bacteria levels primarily consisted of firmicutes. As they lost more weight however, it was noticed that changes in bacterial levels also took place, with bacteroids increasing in concentration just like those of leaner people. This study and others like it are leading researchers to look into other theories about weight loss and dieting which deviate from the conventional.
These studies may be very new but they give renewed hope to many who continuously struggle with obesity and being overweight. If indeed weight loss can be induced by regulating the balance of bacteria in the intestines, the entire concept of dieting would be radically transformed the weight loss and fitness industries would be turned upside down. In the meantime however, as further research is being done, the best thing to do is stick to the time tested and proven weight loss approach of a healthy diet and regular exercise.
