Travel Lifestyle Is Changing

Saturday 8 August 2009 @ 9:22 am

Economic turndown has brought a lot of changes to our socio-economic and political way of life. Workers are being laid off, businesses have frozen expansion programmes, and salaries and bonuses have been suspended while families have cancelled holiday plans.

Households have also tightened their belts with austerity measures all aimed at cutting down expenses while others are coming to terms with the sad fact that their homes have acquired negative mortgage status.Whereas phrase such as credit crunch, economic melt down, economic stimulus are degenerating to cliches in ordinary public use, politicians and economists are giving them increasing attention.

BAA the owner and operator of 7 airports, including Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted airports in London, reported earlier in the year that there have been year-on-year passenger decreases. They say there was a decline of about 7% on average between November 2008 and Jan 2009. In the same period, domestic traffic fell by 12.0 per cent, European traffic was down by six per cent, North Atlantic traffic declined by 5.0 percent and international traffic saw a decrease of 1.9 percent.

Airlines know their trade well. They are also changing with time. Most travellers are now getting what hitherto was reserved for the rich. From airport lounges to 5-star hotels, heavily discounted upgrades and business-oriented rate cards are now being highly promoted in a bid to woo cash cows: business travelers.

Airlines are also giving business travelers extras such as fanciful Wi-Fi, satellite radio, advance seat assignments and priority boarding to lure customers. It can’t get better for ordinary travellers. This is the time to grab a cheap airport hotel or a cheap flight to paradise. It will be a good way to remember the recession in years to come.

Businesses are booking fewer banquet halls and blocks of rooms in expensive hotels leaving many establishments vacant. This has taken away a reliable revenue portfolio that used to generate income. Corporate travelers often pay higher airfares to sit in the first class cabins. Moreover businesses are able to book flights and coaches at short notice irrespective of the cost.

Corporate meetings are being replaced with teleconferencing-type business meetings employing technology that was getting a bit moribund. Teleconferencing was first created for the corporate world but adoption of this technology has slowed down attracting interest from marginal users such as doctors and teachers. Cynics have refused to empathise with the corporate world because they feel that the corporate, especially the financial institutions, precipitated the economic melt down.

Interestingly, this changing scenario goes a long way to give credence to the law of compensation. According to popular belief, for every loss there is a gain and for every thing we gain there must be a loss. Some people reckon that there are no exceptions. Businesses have always tried to exploit this situation by turning adversity into opportunity. We can see this playing out in the travel industry. The industry has become more and more competitive. We know that high unemployment affects the economy as less people have money to spend which in turn affect the businesses. This is directly and indirectly responsible for poor economic growth, a situation that affects us all. The question is, who is gaining from this loss?

The prolonged drop in passenger traffic has heightened the price and capacity war among major carriers on both popular international and domestic routes. Airlines are using a combination of fare discount and new aircraft to woo passengers. A certain segment of passengers continue to savour this price war as fares keep fluctuating on the domestic routes, allowing them to save money and choose airlines with low fares. So although we know that many people have suspended flying because of hard economic times, there is a new crop of travellers emerging, those who shunned travelling during the time of economic boom.

To follow the chain of events from a particular cause through to its effect would be virtually impossible as a complex series of actions takes place from the initial cause. How much this is a direct cause and effect remains a debatable point.

For now we can comfortably say that that recession has introduced a new dimension to travelling. I hope that you will, at last, the place you have always dreamt about but never made it due to prohibitive charges. Every cloud has a silver lining. We can change this recession into an opportunity.

In Need Of Annual Travel Insurance?

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 1:51 pm

Annual travel insurance policies can be deceivingly luring because you have an entire year to enjoy travel funds without having to repay the loans. Upon closer inspection, many policies reveal incomplete cover of travel needs.

Because people today travel for all sorts of reasons, ranging from business to family vacations to adventure travel, holiday insurance policies have evolved to meet the needs of a wide variety of consumers. It’s no longer one-size fits all, so it’s important to look at the various policies to decide which ones are suitable for your needs. As an example, if you are taking a vacation to a cold climate to do some skiing or mountaineering, you ought to give a winter sports insurance policy a look.

But suppose you wanted to take a trip that involves bungee jumping and white-water rafting, an adventure holiday insurance package would be more advisable. You want to be covered by a specific insurance, otherwise possible injuries may not be covered. Be sure to double check with the policy to see if your activities will be covered.

Perhaps you are the adventerous type and your chosen outdoor activities include kayaking, white-water rafting, bungee jumping our rock climbing. Because these are considered high-risk activities, they may be exempt from a regular travel insurance policy. In that case, you would want to look into a holiday adventure insurance policy. Taking one out could save you expensive bills should anything go wrong. But, make sure that when research these policies that they cover the activity in which you plan to participate.

A backpacking holiday is another activity that can require a specialized policy. Backpackers insurance is a form of long term insurance that can last up to 18 months. Policies also cover you when working abroad which may be necessary when travelling for a long period of time, mostly for students. When taking out backpackers insurance it is essential to verify that all the countries you plan to visit are covered by the policy, mainly if you are travelling to countries where your EHIC card is not valid. Also remember that a few third world or war-torn countries may not be covered.

Do you think your employer covers your travel when at work? Think again, because many company sponsored insurance policies don’t cover business equipment such as laptops and smartphones, and you could end up being responsible for their loss. They also may not cover your associated expenses if you become ill and cannot go. Taking out a business insurance policy is a smart move..

Keep in mind that after a certain upper age, usually around 65, insurance can become pricier due to more precautions taken to assure your safety. If this is your case, look for cheaper travel insurance for those over 65. Your age put aside, should you have any pre-existing medical conditions, always keep your insurance company aware of those conditions so to pay the extra fees, if any. Without notifying your insurance company of any conditions insurance may not be able to cover any incidents that involve your condition.

Save Money On Your Next Orlando Family Vacation

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 11:22 am

Everyone is looking for ways to save money nowadays thanks to the recent downturn in the economy. But since your children will only be young once, you don’t need to sacrifice everything! Give them plenty of memories by making a yearly vacation a family tradition; and what better place to go than Orlando, Florida? Orlando is a family paradise, but it needn’t cost an arm and a leg to enjoy it. Here are some ways to save money on your next Orlando family vacation.

– Take a good, hard luck on where you choose to stay. It may seem attractive to stay at one of the theme park hotels, but doing so can seem like flushing money down the toilet since it’s hard to justify spending all that cash just to sleep! There are plenty of amazing, well-managed and kept homes in the Orlando area that are specifically used as family vacation rentals. A beautiful, 4-bedroom, 2 bathroom home within easy distance of the resorts can cost as little as $100 a night and will accommodate up to 10 people! If you are traveling in a group, splitting the rental costs means saving even bigger money.

– Renting a vacation home will not only save money on hotel rooms, it will also save a fortune in food. The average family of four can easily spend $300 per diem for their meals in one of the theme parks, and that’s not counting snacks! By having access to a kitchen right where you are staying, you can eat breakfast in-house and then pack lunches and snacks for everyone to eat throughout the day.

– Beware of the hidden costs of drinks! A single theme park soda may cost up to $5, depending on its size: ouch. Because it’s essential to stay well hydrated in the hot Florida sun, a better solution is for each person to carry his or her own refillable water bottle. Because it’s difficult to walk around and go on rides with a large bottle, get the smallest kind: since it’s refillable, it will work great.

– It’s perfectly OK to set strict limits on pricey souvenirs. Emphasize to your children that vacations are for making memories, and not for collecting junk. You may wish to limit each child to getting just one souvenir within a set price limit. You will virtually eliminate the “I wanna” syndrome and your wallet will thank you.

Attractions In Chicago Fit For The Whole Family

Thursday 6 August 2009 @ 9:20 pm

When I was a junior in high school, I passed up an opportunity to visit Chicago, Illinois, for a future teachers’ conference because: one, it was over my father’s birthday, and two, it was in February, and since I am a Phoenix native, February in Chicago sounds more than slightly daunting.

While I don’t regret my decision to stay home and celebrate with my dad (and stay warm), I have spent time since then wondering what Chicago is like. In fact, as my spouse and I begin to plan our next vacation destination, I have definitely begun to see the appeal of visiting Chicago.

My husband and I have extremely varied interests, but this booming metropolis offers something for everyone, quite literally. Chicago’s Museum Campus features the famous Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, which I know will absolutely fascinate my husband.

The Adler Planetarium was the first of its kind in the entire Western Hemisphere. Wow! It is home to more than 35,000 square feet of exhibits and two full-size planetarium theatres which are capable of reproducing virtually all of the movements of the night sky.

For animal lovers like me, the metropolitan area of Chicago actually features more than one full-sized zoo. The Brookfield Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals, and it actually developed the very first Giant Panda display in America! Both the petting zoo and the Play Zoo allow young and old alike to have closer interaction with all kinds of animals.

The Lincoln Park Zoo, open year-round, dates back to 1868, yet still uses many modern structures and technologies within the park to create a unique experience, combining modern and historical architecture. Both zoological institutions provide amazing experiences and close encounters for the whole family.

The famous Sears Tower is just one of the incredible feats of architecture to be both seen and explored in Chicago. From the tower’s Sky Deck, perched on the one hundred and third floor, you can get a spectacular vision of the whole city. On a clear day, you can see up to fifty miles away, getting glimpses of Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

The Sears Tower is also a great attraction for history buffs. The Sky Deck also offers a museum of sorts, with various exhibits which explain the history behind Chicago and some of Illinois’ key figures, like Abraham Lincoln. There are even some exhibits geared specifically toward children.

These are just a few activities and attractions which await us in beautiful Chicago. But one thing is for sure–we won’t be going in February!

How to Get a Visa for Travel to China

Thursday 6 August 2009 @ 7:25 pm

Travelers to China from the US need to abide some very strict rules. There are different rules which apply to business travelers, than those which apply to tourists, but there are some things which apply to everyone. The requirements for a visa to China, whether for pleasure or business, are as follows.

Before you can get a visa for China, you need a valid US passport which is more than six months away from its expiry date and has two or more blank visa pages. If you can’t fulfill both of these requirements, your China visa will be refused.

In addition, you need to supply a photo which fits passport regulations. That is, either black and white or color, two inches by two inches, and with a white background. Most professional photographers will be aware of passport photo regulations. It’s best to have your photo professionally done, as photos from home passport software are often rejected.

Next, you need to complete a visa application form. The form you use is specific to the type of China visa you are applying for, so be sure that you have the correct type. Be sure also that you fill in all the required information, and write legibly. Don’t leave blank spaces, as these, as well as anything which can’t be read, will result in refusal of your application. You must sign the form in ink.

You need to supply proof that you intend to travel to China within three months, with your China visa application. A dated airline ticket or itinerary copy should be sufficient for this. You also need to show that you have somewhere to stay, in the form of confirmation of your accommodation reservations.

There are, of course, fees for making an application for a visa to China. Your application will not even be considered unless these fees have been paid in full. Payment is accepted in the form of checks, credit card payments or money orders made to the People’s Republic of China. The fee will be higher if your application has to be expedited.

There are strict regulations which apply to the issuing of visas to China. Whichever type of visa you need, you must fill out the correct paperwork and send it with the appropriate fees. If you make any mistakes in the application process, your application will be denied. You should submit all your paperwork for the China visa three months before you intend to travel, to allow sufficient processing time, otherwise your trip could be delayed or even canceled completely.

Things Every American Should Know About Obtaining a Chinese Visa

Thursday 6 August 2009 @ 7:25 pm

There are some very strict rules governing travel from the US to China. Business travelers and tourists have some very different rules but there are some things in common that everyone should know.
China visa requirements for both business and pleasure travelers include the following:

In order to obtain a China visa, business and pleasure travelers must possess a valid US passport with at least six months left before its expiration date and no less than two blank visa pages. If either of these requirements is not met, the request for a visa to China will be denied.

All applicants must provide a passport regulation photo. Specifications are 2″ x 2″. Color or black & white photos are acceptable, but the background must be white. Almost all professional photographers are familiar with all of the regulations concerning the making of acceptable passport photos. Photo software that generates such photos at home often produces photos that will be rejected, so having photos made professionally is recommended.

One must submit a completed visa application form. China uses specific forms for specific visa types, making it necessary to ensure that you have the proper form for the visa type you are requesting. It is important to ensure that all lines are filled out properly and legibly. Any blank or unreadable spaces will result in the application being denied. Signatures must be in ink.

In order to receive a Chinese visa, travelers must provide proof of intent to travel within the next three months to China. An itinerary for the trip or copies of airline tickets dated within three months will work. Confirmation of hotel reservations is also required to prove that you have a place to stay during your trip.

Of course, there are fees associated with applying for a Chinese visa. These must be paid in full before a visa application will be considered, let alone approved. Checks, money orders, or credit card payments to the People’s Republic of China are the only acceptable forms of payment. Fees can vary depending on whether or not the application needs to be expedited.

The regulations governing issuing Chinese visas are very strict. No matter which type of visa is being applied for, the proper paperwork must be filled out and submitted along with the proper fees. Any mistakes made on the part of the applicant in the process will quickly result in a denial of the application. It is highly recommended that each person seeking a Chinese visa submit all of the paperwork and supporting documentation three months prior to making the trip in order to allow adequate time for complete processing of the application in order to avoid any delays or possible needs to cancel the trip entirely.

Should You Apply for a Business or Tourist Visa for China?

Thursday 6 August 2009 @ 6:47 pm

Applying for a visa for China can be a very confusing business. Your whole trip can be delayed or you might even find you have to cancel it altogether, if you haven’t applied for the fight kind of visa. If you are unsure whether you need a business visa or a tourist visa, then there are rules which cover each of these, and classifications within these types, which you might need to know more about.

A tourist visa to China, known as a class ‘L’ visa, is required if your trip to that country is purely for pleasure purposes, either for a vacation or to visit friends or family there. If you travel on a tourist visa to China and then conduct any kind of business there, you will face heavy fines and deportation if caught.

‘L’ class China visas are classified according to the number of entries into the country each visa allows. With a single entry visa one person is allowed to enter the country once only, for a specified length of stay. Usually the stay is 3 to 6 months. If you have a double entry visa you can enter and leave the country twice, both visits within a certain specified time frame, which is again usually 3 to 6 months.

If you obtain an ‘L’ class China tourist visa, you can also apply for a multiple entry visa, which allows you to visit the country on a number of occasions during the specified time frame, which is usually between 6 and 12 months.

If you intend to travel to China to conduct business, or to lecture or carry out investigations, then you need a business visa, or a type ‘F’ visa. The same is true of travel for cultural exchange or advanced study courses.

A business visa to China comes in the same entry types as does the tourist visa. Single and double entry visas are usually limited for use within six months. Multiple entry visas of this type can usually be applied for to cover a 12 month period, and under specific circumstances you can apply for extension to 24 months.

To apply for a China visa, you should visit your local post office in the US, the Chinese embassy, or a passport processor (private or online). On your application you will need to state your reasons for wanting to visit China. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure which type of China visa you need. All you need to do is fill in the relevant details with regard to your plans for what you are going to do in China, and the Chinese consulate will use this information to issue the type of visa you need.

All the rules and regulations, about what type of visa you need, how many times you can enter the country, the length of time the visa covers, and so on, can make applying for a visa to China very confusing. The simplest thing to do, therefore, is to fill out your application fully and honestly, and then leave it to the Chinese consulate to work out which visa type you need for your travel to China.

How Does Corporate Housing Work?

Thursday 6 August 2009 @ 11:23 am

There is simply nothing more important than the home, remember, it’s where the heart is. What people consider a home is something a lot more than just where they live and how it looks, it’s a certain state of mind that brings a person peace of mind. Whether it’s a trailer or a mansion, there is always that feel that brings a person inner solace in the fact that they are where they belong, even in the case of corporate housing, where it may be something temporary.

What is Corporate Housing, and why is it better?

Corporate housing is a term used to describe where a company would rent furnished apartments or homes to a patron, an alternative to being in an extended stay hotel room. That particular alternative is something that is clearly better, as hotel rooms; do not give off a feeling of home. The hotel room can be something that is one of the nicest in the world, but it can never beat the feeling that you are where you should be.

The hotel is something isn’t something that is designed to be really lived in, as everything can be quite drab and feel as if it is just a box. In corporate housing, it brings the feeling of home when you’re not exactly home. Corporate housing floor plans generally dwarf those of extended stays, as well.

How does it work?

Corporate housing is something quite simple, actually. By contacting an agency prior to a business trip or something of the sort, a person would then get floor plans of where they may have them available. After talking about a few things such as duration of the stay and how the payment will be handled. The issue of payment in corporate housing is usually handled on a month to month basis, similar to an apartment. The bill can be sent to the employer, the person staying, or the insurance company.

Many corporate housing companies are pretty streamlined, and are even willing to turn off the utilities in the room if the person does not get around to it. They work similar to a hotel in this way, yet they are generally not as invasive as a hotel can be at times. Many corporate housing solutions do not generally have the housekeepers that enter the room to clean, as most of this is done between occupants. In the case of corporate housing, the company is usually willing to do a lot of the work for the person, as the person on the business trip would rather be concerned with the business aspect.

Corporate housing is something that is quite wonderful, especially considering the alternative of a extended stay. Touting bigger floor plans and a more personalized feel, it makes it something of a no-brainer. The operation is something that isn’t particularly too much different than that of a hotel, operating in big cities and providing the services that a person would need to have a successful business trip.

Just because you are away from home, doesn’t mean you can’t expect to feel at home in our Toronto short term rental apartments. Toronto furnished apartments provide more living space, a competitive nightly rate and even greater savings for short term stays.
