The Important Of Fitness For A Young Athlete

Monday 10 August 2009 @ 12:51 am

There is no substitute for daily exercise in building a strong, healthy body. Locomotive sports and activities such as walking, running, climbing, rowing, swimming, wrestling, and bicycling are valuable in keeping fit, and most experts agree that normal people should participate in this kind of exercise an hour each day.

Before beginning a physical fitness program, boys should be examined by their doctors. They should receive a medical check-up once a year and a dental check-up twice each year to detect defects or incipient diseases which may develop.

Exercises

There are many ways in which young athletes can keep physically fit the year round and thus improve their ability to play baseball and other athletic games. An excellent exercise is that of rope-jumping. Many athletic directors and basketball coaches use this exercise extensively for basketball players, and it is a favorite of professional and amateur boxers, wrestlers, and track athletes. Rope-jumping is highly recommended for developing agility, leg muscles, endurance, coordination, and rhythm, which are so important for baseball players.

Since research indicates that American boys are pathetically weak in the development of the upper shoulder girdle and since these muscles are so important in throwing and hitting, several exercises are recommended. One is rope-climbing, which helps to develop the upper shoulder as well as the biceps. To get the maximum benefit of this exercise, one should not slide down the rope, but lower himself hand-over-hand in the same manner as in climbing the rope.

Pull-ups also are very good for the development of the arms and shoulders. Young athletes should practice so that they can pull up their weight at least ten times.

Strong wrists have great value to any athlete, and one way to develop wrist strength is to use bar bells or rods and to move them up and down with the wrists.

Finger strength can be developed by doing push-ups on the tips of the fingers, but this exercise should not be used before participating in a game or practice drill. It should be done at the conclusion of a workout or practice session. Another method of strengthening the hands is to carry a sponge rubber ball and to squeeze it frequently.

Tumbling can be helpful in building coordination and balance. Individual gymnastic stunts such as forward and backward rolls, balancing on one leg and leaning as far forward as possible, doing a hand stand, and jumping in the air and spinning around to land facing in the opposite direction are helpful exercises.

Handball is an outstanding conditioner. Many of the arm movements are similar to throws in baseball, and both hands and arms are developed. You learn to stop and to go in a hurry, you make quick moves in all directions, gain strength and endurance, practice hand-eye coordination, learn to judge bounces off the wall as outfielders do and the hops of ground balls as infielders do.

Several college basketball coaches have discovered that the use of weights in an exercise can increase the leaping range of an athlete as much as three inches in a season. It doesn’t take much imagination to see that increasing the jumping range of a player will permit him to spear more batted and thrown balls just as it will help him to shoot more baskets and block more shots in basketball.

The drill is simple - place a barbell, which is about one-third the weight of the athlete (if the player weighs 120 pounds, the barbell should weigh 40 pounds) on the shoulders of the player. Then have the player, in an upright position, raise up on the balls of his feet. Repeating this exercise daily and increasing the length of the exercise as strength is gained will give more bounce to the ounce. If barbells are unavailable, tie bags of rock or sand on the ends of a pole and they will serve the same purpose.

Any of the above exercises will increase the fitness of the young athlete and will ultimately help him succeed in his chosen sport.

Be Bold Ask A Guy To The Next Formal Dance

Saturday 8 August 2009 @ 9:23 am

So, the big dance is coming up–whether it’s homecoming, winter formal, prom, or some other exciting event, you just cannot wait, right? But if you’re a girl waiting around for a guy to ask you to be his date, you might feel a little discouraged.

After all, it’s a growing trend among young men to flat out not ask a girl on a date unless he is romantically interested (and even then there’s not always a good possibility). We are in the great age of “hanging out,” rather than dating and even courting. So, ladies, sometimes it’s up to you to make a move–and not just for girls’ choice dances!

Sure, asking a guy out on a date, even when he is a friend, can be daunting. But it can also lead to a wonderful experience, and the lucky young man may just be impressed by your boldness.

Now, keep in mind that you do not have to exclusively consider boys on your list of crushes. I had the best time at dances when my date was a friend who was willing to have a great time and actually danced!

When I went with someone I was interested in romantically, I was nervous and unsure of myself. So keep in mind guys you want to get to know better or ones you are friends with.

While creative ideas to ask a boy out are fun, they can also put some undue pressure on you. You need to also remember that every guy won’t respond the same way, so know your “target,” so to speak. If you need to be direct and just ask him straight out, do so.

That being said, young men especially enjoy when you bake them something. If you have friends that are trying to similarly ask out their dates, you can collaborate to turn it into one big project.

Some girls paint a plank or piece of plywood to make the request and lean it against a garage or place it in a carport for the young man to see when he returns home from school or an after-school event. You could team up with another girl if she wants to ask a brother or next-door neighbor. Simple poetry can also be fun to incorporate, but keep it from being sappy or too romantic unless the guy is one you are already dating.

If you aren’t sure about your own baking abilities, think about ordering him a pizza and asking them to include your invitation. He will certainly be pleasantly surprised.

When it comes to asking a guy out to a dance, don’t take it too seriously–even if you get turned down. The goal is to have a great time, not make yourself miserable. So go and make the whole experience unforgettable in the best way possible.

How To Host Murder Mystery Themed Parties

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 9:41 pm

When I was young, parties generally consisted of a barely set jelly, some cheese and pineapple on sticks and a disco DJ playing Agadoo and the Birdie Song. Even celebrity soirees were a much more low-key affair than they are today. Sometimes it seems that without a guest appearance from an A List celebrity, it’s not worth popping the cork on a bottle of Cava. All is not lost though, themed parties are becoming an increasingly popular way to entertain guests, and now accessing props is easier than ever, it is possible to throw a party to rival the rich and famous. This is a brief guide to hosting your own murder mystery themed parties.

The great thing about a murder mystery themed party is that it has the potential to last all weekend, not just for an evening. In addition to that, taking on the persona of a character can be a wonderful ice breaker for guests that don’t know each other that well. Some people choose to organise or attend these events as a hobby, which is testament to the success of holding a murder mystery party.

To set the scene, you first need to find a suitable script. These scripts can be set in any place and in any era. So whether you fancy dressing as a Victorian dandy, a 1920s flapper or indulging in an exotic Eastern mystery in a harem, then the choice is yours. Once you’ve selected the script, it is time to get the invites out and start ordering everything you need to set the scene.

You may need to consider venue hire depending on the amount of space you already have available. One of the most popular solutions for themed parties is to hire a marquee. This allows a dedicated space to be decorated according to the theme, and the sense of a completely separate space means that the guests can keep in character. There are of course many venues that can be hired for themed parties, from hotels and country houses to city centre clubs.

To ensure full immersion, ensure every last detail is correct for the theme. Look at books, and do some historical research to get the right aesthetic setting, or ask the advice of a dedicated themed party organiser. These companies often have complete sets for kitting out a venue and making it look authentic, saving you a lot of much needed time.

Finally, make sure that all the guests have a copy of the script and an itinerary well before the event. To really make your murder mystery themed party go with a veritable bang, insist that everyone turns up already in character and well aware of how the evening or weekend is going to progress.

Tips for Getting the Right Size of Ski Snow Boots

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 9:36 pm

As it makes logical sense, if you are going to go snow skiing we all know that ski snow boots are a necessary part of the equipment. You can snow board, but if you want to ski snow boots are the most common way to ski.

There are many reasons ski snow boots are necessary and that a normal snow boot won’t work. Whether you are a new skier or one that is experienced you will find yourself agreeing that a good fitting pair of ski snow boots is the most critical piece of equipment to enjoying a day out of the slopes.
It is important to understand the reasons the boots are made they way they are.

There are some of the obvious such as you need a ski snow boot is that they have to have the feature and ability to attach the boot to the ski using ski bindings. They are generally composed of a hard plastic shell which protects the snow from coming into the foot area so that the feet can stay dryer. There is generally a soft foam liner that provides the warmth and comfort. Together they provide a valuable ski snow boot.

With these things in mind you will want to understand the most critical part of a ski snow boot. That is that it fits comfortably. While shopping for boots you might find yourself feeling like you can take a boot that is a little too big or a little bit too small due to a sale or the only size and you are in a hurry.

You will not want to do this. This is something that you can’t skimp on or purchase in a hurry. You will want to wear them around the house and make sure they fit comfortably before you go out on the slopes. It would be terrible to get out on the slope and find out that they don’t fit and not enjoy your day on the slopes.

A couple of basic things to consider with the ski snow boots that will help in deciding on the right size for you are:
1. They should immediately feel too small. You want your big toe to touch the front of the boot.
2. You want your toes to feel tight without too much moving room.
3. You want to make sure that the heel of your foot doesn’t lift too much up and down. You want it to feel tight.
These are a few tips to help in purchasing that perfect set of ski snow boots.

The Story Behind The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 8:41 pm

If you’ve ever been on the road in Wyoming, Nebraska, or Minnesota in late July and wanted to take a break at a highway rest stop, chances are good that parking spaces were at premium, thanks to the mass migration of motorcycles heading to Sturgis, South Dakota for the annual motorcycle rally. There’s no mistaking the signs: Harleys by the hundreds roar toward this small Midwestern town from every direction at the same time each summer, and it’s a tradition held dear by many bikers.

Located in Meade County, in the western part of South Dakota, is generally a sleepy little town of 6,000 or so; but during the first week in August its population will swell to over 700,000, creating a circus atmosphere and excitement in the air: not to mention exhaust fumes! But the Rally is a chance for motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world to get together, meet up with old and new friends, go on rides, participate in riding events, purchase goods from vendors, and enjoy world-class entertainment. Here’s the story behind the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Back in the 1930’s, motorcycle enthusiasts were (as a group) a rather adventurous lot, and the freedom of the open road was calling many. One such biking fan was J. Clarence “Pappy” Hoel who, in 1936, bought a share in the Indian Motorcycle Company. In 1938 he staged a rally for motorcycle clubs in his home town of Sturgis, South Dakota and invited bikers from clubs nationwide to join together and participate in skill events.

The Black Hills Motor Classic was held in the summer of 1938, and the nine racers and tiny group of spectators had no problem finding a place to stay then! The idea caught on in a big way and a tradition was born. By 1963, the rally had become a multi-day deal, attracting thousands of riders, as well as spectators and their families who enjoyed the hill climb and motocross events.

In 1975, the Main Street of the once sleepy little town was blocked off during the event to allow bikers to park their bikes and not deal with traffic concerns. Vendors began arriving in droves, and the rally as it is known today began to take form. Today, bikers bring their entire families, including babies, to enjoy the Sturgis experience. “Pappy” Hoel proved himself prophetic 70 years ago when he foresaw the economic boom the rally would bring to the area.

There are plenty of other motorcycle rallies across the United States each summer, but Sturgis is the granddaddy of them all: it is an experience not to be missed.

A Quick Look At The Top Movies Of 2009

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 6:20 pm

Movies are one of America’s favorite pastimes. There is just something about seeing a brand new movie in a large theater with a large screen while lounging on a usually comfortable chair with a bowl of popcorn and a soda in the cup holder. Since the first silent movie was made, people have not been able to get enough of movies. What are some of the top movies of 2009?

One movie that was iffy to a lot of people was Star Trek. After all, previous Star Trek films have been released, and they were just missing an important element that made Star Trek what it was. Anyone who saw the movie, however, can attest to its brilliance. Packed with action and drama, Star Trek became the movie to beat for 2009.

At the end of June, Shia LeBouf and Megan Fox teamed up again to battle the Decepticons in Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Sequels are either hit or miss, and many viewers are happy to report that, for the most part, the movie was a big hit. Running more than two hours long, the movie features intense battle scenes as well as some comedic parts.

In August, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra will be released to the great anticipation of many moviegoers - both fans and non-fans alike. Featuring a stellar cast, the movie trailer shows great promise as it brings extraordinary visuals and action-packed special effects.

You either love him or hate him. Like James Bond, Sherlock Holmes is getting yet another remake, but it features an outstanding cast with Robert Downey, Jr., who is taking the leading role of Holmes alongside Jude Law as his trusty sidekick Watson.

The Mayan civilization has been making reference to this year for quite a long time, and now viewers can see what could possibly happen in the year 2012. Featuring John Cusack and Amanda Peet as a couple who basically try to live, 2012 will feature plenty of special effects and breathtaking visuals, and some might actually be a little scary…

Very seldom do movies who have multiple sequels remain good, but the Harry Potter series defies the stereotype. In the sixth installment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince takes on a darker path as the movie explores the evil wizard, Voldemort’s, childhood. Plus, Harry Potter and the gang are getting older and battling through the woes of adolescence and young love.

Terminator Salvation, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Angels & Demons, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Public Enemies… so many good movies have been released or will be released this year. Get some popcorn, relax, and enjoy the movies!

Enjoying Movies And Video Games In HD

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 11:10 am

Standard definition is quickly being replaced with high definition. In a matter of a few years, the norm could very well be in the high definition format. Many are realizing the benefits of owning a home theater system and are flocking to electronics stores to get the best deals on HDTVs, Blu-Ray players and movies, and other peripherals.

Before you splurge on your new home theater set up, there are some factors that you need to take into consideration. First, you need to have the money to buy the necessary devices. Depending on what your needs are, you may need as little as a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. Consider what you will be using this home theater for. Will it be used mainly for movies and some television shows? Or do you crave a new video gaming experience?

One important factor that often gets overlooked is how much space you have. When you think about a home theater system, you might think of the devices required and you might envision what a movie or video would look like on the HDTV, but you don’t usually think of making the space to place the system. Make sure that you have enough space for the complete set up. If you want the living room to be the center of attraction in your home, then so be it. Sometimes, however, you might need to relocate all of your electronics to another room, especially if you want to dedicate the home theater to a particular room. Making a rough sketch and getting the dimensions of the entertainment center plus any other peripherals, such as speakers, will give you a better understanding of placement.

If you want the system mainly for movies, then you will need to invest in a Blu-Ray player to get the most out of movies. While DVDs on a big screen HDTV will look good, it won’t look as good as a Blu-Ray movie. When it comes to the type of TV, both plasmas and LCDs, after weighing the pros and cons of each, come out at about even. Of course, you can always invest in the new OLED TVs, which is rumored to quickly replace both LCD and plasma TVs in a matter of time.

When it comes to video gaming, using a HDMI cable rather than component or composite cables will give you the best possible picture. Many games on the XBOX 360 and the PlayStation 3 feature cut scenes that look very realistic and can rival the cinematic special effects in movies.

Digital Arts Impact On The Movie Industry

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 11:08 am

If you do not think there is a demand for people in the digital arts industry, then you are terribly mistaken. Taking a quick look around you will quickly debunk your opinion and change it to reflect the realization that there is indeed a huge demand for employees in digital arts.

Things that we may not think are influenced by art are, in fact, influenced by technology greatly. Depending on which room you are located in right now, you might be close to a sofa or couch, a mattress, or other furniture, correct? All of these items may have been a direct result of digital art. A lot of furniture nowadays is made with the aid of machinery. Obviously, a designer had to layout the format of the piece of furniture and someone else implemented this design into the machine to produce the item.

Digital arts not only affects furniture or other common household items. It obviously has made a tremendous impact on the movie industry. There was a time when special effects in a movie were made with handcrafted models. It was very time consuming and required a lot of patience, but nowadays, there hardly is a need for such models on the movie set. With the aid of computer technology and digital arts software, characters and even whole landscapes and scenery can be created with the computer.

If you have ever watched a documentary on how movies are made, you might have seen actors acting out a scene in front of a giant blue screen. Yes, that blue screen is replaced with special effects rendered with art software later on. As a result of this technology, you probably have noticed the wealth of digital cartoon movies that have been released as of late. Shrek, Ice Age, Finding Nemo… all of these movies were created with digital arts software.

Best of all, this is not a phase, and it is not going to slow down any time soon. In fact, the visual graphics in movies will only continue to improve from this point on, and there is an increasing demand for innovative, creative, and resourceful artists who can create lovable characters and beautiful backgrounds on the computer. Without the artists in the movie industry today, such movies as Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Transformers would not have the same effect. It would most likely be absent of the wow factor that has made those movies so popular.

Having these technologies at our disposal opens up a whole new realm and a whole new world of possibilities.

There are also available cruises that offer a four month trip around the world.

Experience a Icy Adventure Through an Alaskan Cruise

Friday 7 August 2009 @ 10:04 am

When you consider cruising, one of the important factors that you look for is the itinerary. A popular cruise destination includes the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, the Bahamas, and Panama Canal. It offers quite different vacation treat for cruise ships’ passengers, especially for the first timers.

However, for regular cruise aficionados, they are looking for an idea of a cruise that is a little different from the usual destinations previously mentioned. If the itinerary is still the same although they are sailing with different cruise line, the element of uniqueness and excitement is not present in their cruise vacation.

If you are ready to do something different, then try the Alaskan adventure. It has everything that will suit your need. It is indeed a perfect getaway either for a short excursion or for a long vacation.

Alaska is the largest state in the United States in terms of land area (570,374 square miles); if superimposed over the map of the country, it can cover the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Although having an enormous land area, it is one of the largely unpopulated areas in the world, with animals outnumbering human settlers.

Its boundaries are marked by natural landscape like mountain ranges and streams. The largest attraction in Alaska is its ice glaciers, which makes it a perfect destination for cruising. Sailing along its lengthy coastline allows you to observe these spectacular sights.

In case you prefer in selecting a cruise that will bring you in Glacier Bay, you will be witnessing the glaciers calving. Calving is the process by which the rivers of ice drop breaks off the edge of the cliff into the sea. Larger mass of glaciers can perform this several times an hour. It is the breathtaking part when you decide to make an Alaskan cruise.

While seeing these glaciers calving, you may also have the urge to touch it. Lucky for you, there are cruise lines that provide helicopter rides and hiking which permits you to step on one of these ice glaciers, which you cannot experience on any other cruise destination in the world.

If you’re on an Alaskan cruise vacation, you may also want to check Tracy Arm Fjord, which is a stretch of water that ventures inland and away from the shoreline. It will allow you to experience the power of the granite walls, mountain peaks, and majestic waterfalls from an unusual point.

Perfect months on getting an Alaskan cruise are from May through September. In other words, you can expect a decrease in the temperature compared to over hundred degrees temperature in the South during summer season.

There are two most popular Alaskan cruises. The first one is the Inside Passage cruise, which generally runs a length of about a week. It includes itinerary stops at Ketchikan, Skagway, and Juneau. Different sights and side trips can also be expected when you take this cruise.

The second one is the Gulf of Alaska cruise or also known as the Glacier Route Cruise. You can expect to see the Glacier Bay, which is previously mentioned in this article, and possibly the Hubbard Glacier.

Whichever cruise you prefer, the cruise lines will provide you options on the ships that you want to board. There are smaller excursion ships that can carry an average of 150 passengers. You can take a closer look at a glacier rather than using the larger cruise ships.

The choices are all dependent on you. If you are really an adventurous-type individual, you want to book a smaller cruise vessel although it is quite expensive. If sightseeing for you is enough, then a bigger cruise ship is good for you. No worries, though, whichever you choose, always expect the unexpected.

It is all bared-what is Alaska and what can it offer to you. Once you get going, you will forget all about your worries. So board a cruise ship and start your Alaskan cruise right away. Enjoy cruising!
