Learning how to tune a guitar effectively is one of the most basic skills all guitar players need to learn and one of the most elusive skills to master. There are two main methods of guitar tuning. (with several variations) The first of these is by ear, the second is using a tuner. No matter which you choose, being in tune is essential to your success.

Tuning the guitar by ear is a way for the musician to ensure that the instrument is in tune with itself. It does not necessarily mean the guitar will be in tune tonally with the agreed upon standard that is known as concert pitch. Therefore, unless the musician is gifted with perfect pitch, it is only really valuable for practice and solo play.

You may of course play with other musicians if everyone tunes to the same instrument, even if it is not in concert pitch. However, if the musician has access to a reference note, possibly from a pitch pipe or tuning fork, then it is possible to use this method to tune to concert pitch.

The most common method is to begin with the bottom E string, and tune it to pitch. Then move a finger to the 5th fret and play the E and A string together, and tune the A string to the same pitch as the bottom E, repeat this for the D and G strings, the B string is tuned using the 4th fret of the G string, instead of the 5th fret, and then back to the 5th fret on the B string to tune top E.

This is the simplest method of tuning a guitar by ear; it is quick and effective, although it does suffer from inaccuracy if the intonation of the guitar strings is not adjusted correctly. There are several more advanced methods, some of which play strings in multiple positions to overcome intonation imperfections using harmonics.

Tuning a Guitar using a Tuner The electronic guitar tuner may be the single most unifying feature for the everyday guitarists. It enabled even the most apprentice guitar player to tune with confidence and sound like everybody else. Unless you happen to be lucky enough to have perfect pitch, then using a guitar tuner is probably the most reliable way of ensuring your instrument is tuned to concert pitch.

A guitar tuner is a small electrical device, which measures the electrical current of the guitar output, to judge the current tuning. The most simple electric guitar tuner will allow the musician to plug their guitar in to the device, and then choose which string they wish to tune. There is also a feature for acoustic guitars that allows you to avoid plugging into the device and only use a built in microphone.

The musician then plucks the string, and the tuner displays whether the string is sharp (too highly pitched), flat (too low pitched), or in tune by a number of methods; either a needle display or LED lights or a combination of both. Once the musician is satisfied that the current string is in tune, they move on to the next. Note, most competent musicians prefer to check the tuning by ear afterwards. The reason for this, is if a string is tuned first, and other strings have their tensions changed as part of the tuning process, then the first string (or possibly several strings), will lose their perfect tuning.

Most commonly, a musician will use the tuner to get a rough tuning, then tune again by ear, then recheck using the tuner, making fine adjustments.

Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar or Ki ho ‘alu in the Hawaiian language is a sweet easy going type of music. I have found it to be one of the easiest styles of guitar playing to learn and people love hearing it. This finger style guitar music has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds over the last several years. It may be because it brings peace and calming to people who listen to it in this troublesome time we are living in at the moment.

Here is how I got involved in this alternate guitar tuning music. I moved to Hawaii in my ninth grade summer in 1963 with my family because my father who was in the military got transferred there. I guess this was probably the most influential part of my life at the young age of 15 and I had just bought a surf board with the proceeds from my paper route in San Diego. I was stoked out of my mind when my dad came home and told us we were moving to Hawaii. I have always been an adventurous type and saw this as an adventure of a lifetime.

I spent the summer there learning about the Hawaiian culture. My dad got a night job to make ends meet as a construction supervisor for a huge remodeling project going on at the International Market Place in down town Honolulu on the Island of Oahu. He got me a job there as well. This was a huge cultural center at the time. Thousand of tourist and locals would go there each evening to watch and hear the great Hawaiian luau shows.

I was 15 years old and working steps away from the stage of one of the premier Hawaiian shows of its time each and every night. The Hawaiian Ukulele, and Slack key guitar, and the beautiful falsetto, singing was captivating. And let’s face it I was 15 and this place had about 100 hula dancers performing every night. I was soon a regular stage side fixture for each show. I knew every song and this music truly crept into my soul.

I soon bought an old Stella guitar from a friend for 3 dollars and tried to learn to play this music.
Every night a group of us kids would gather on a corner under a mango tree and play music. Us “Haoles” or none Hawaiian and “locals” Hawaiians would share the love of our music. These sessions would always start off with the music of the day, “House of the Rising Sun” that kind of stuff, then the local boys would re-tune their guitars and leave us “Haoles” in the dust so to speak and begin their traditional music. That is when I began to learn about the Slack-key thing.

Most of the Hawaiian slack key songs seem to have the same theme through out them.The Hawaiians are a proud people and love their culture. They usually are singing about love, food, the land and ocean and the beautiful abundance of Hawaii. This music has power, depth, and passion. Although I don’t understand most of the lyrics in the songs I can quite often tear up just hearing this beautiful music because it brings me back to those beautiful islands, feeling that warm breeze, the smell of the ocean and flowers in the air and those beautiful dancers.

Ki ho ‘Alu or Slack Key guitar is a Finger style type of guitar music. The term slack key refers to English translation of the Hawaiian word (Ki ho ‘Alu) to loosen the tuning keys on your guitar. Most of the hundreds of alternate tunings for guitar playing start with the guitar being tuned in C major tuning, or sometimes referred to standard tuning.

The process begins with loosening or taking off the tension of the string by unwinding instead of tightening the string. This is a big lesson that was probably learned very quickly. Most people who start playing guitar tighten the strings to the point of them snapping. This can be avoided if you use a tuning fork or purchase an electronic tuner found in most music stores.

An American heavy metal band founded in 1992 in Oakland, California, Machine Head has been classified as one of the pioneers in the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Started by the vocalist and guitarist, Rob Flynn and bass guitarist, Adam Duce, along with guitarist Logan Mader and drummer Tony Constanza, Machine Head has only seen 4 separate changes in band members during their entire succession as a band in the last 17 years of operation. Although the name has spiked some controversy about it stemming from a Deep Purple album of the same name, Flynn compiled the name under the thought that it ’sounded cool’. Currently Machine Head members consist of Rob Flynn, Adam Duce, Dave McClain and Phil Demmel.

During the production of their debut album Burn My Eyes, Constanza left the band and was replaced by Chris Kontos. During an Ozzfest tour to support The More Things Change and The Burning Red, Mader quit the band and was replaced by Ahrue Luster in order for Machine Head to continue touring. With issues surrounding Roadrunner Records, Machine Head was forced to leave the American label of Roadrunner but stayed on with Roadrunner International while Luster left the band due to individual musical discrepancies. Demmel filled in as a temporary band member and eventually joined Machine Head as a full-time member.

Machine Head currently has 6 studio releases to their accomplishments over the duration of their time together. Burn My Eyes (1984), The More Things Change (1997), The Burning Red (1999), Supercharger (2001), Through the Ashes of Empires (2003) and The Blackening (2007) have all molded Machine Head and their fan following to what they are today. The Machine Head album of Supercharger in 2001 was ill timed due to the effects of 9/11 attacks and the music video that depicted buildings crashing down and the skyline of flames. Although the video was produced before the fateful attacks, it was still banned from MTV due to its graphic nature and criticism.

As part of the expanding Machine Head merch available for their fans, October 2005 brought the release of the very first Machine Head DVD - Elegies. This contained footage of a concert from the Brixton Academy show in December of 2004 as well as 3 music videos. With detailed documentary aspects including historical aspects of the band and their battles with record labels during their years together, and the changing members and the musical direction of the band themselves, the DVD proved to be a successful venture for Machine Head reaching high spots in both the American and UK markets.

Marilyn Manson was born on January 5th, 1969 in Canton, Ohio, and was named Brian Hugh Warner. His father, Hugh Warner, is of German and Polish decent, and is Catholic. His Episcopalian mother, Barb Wyer raised him. He attended a Christian school for while before he graduated in 1987 from Cardinal Gibbons High School. Thereafter, he studied journalism at Broward Community College and even wrote for a magazine called 25th Parallel.

The band he formed was originally called Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids but it was shortened to Marilyn Manson in 1992. There are many people who feel that Manson’s music is evil and that it promotes suicide, drugs, violence, and hatred. This is because of his outrageous appearance, controversial behavior when performing on stage and when he is not on stage, as well as the often macabre lyrics in his songs. Without a doubt, Marilyn Manson is most definitely what one would call a shock rocker. Even the name Marilyn Manson is designed to shock. Marilyn is from Marilyn Monroe and Manson he took from Charles Manson, convicted killer and cult leader.

Others say that he is a passing craze and falls into the same category as the controversial rock groups of before, such as KISS, Twisted Sister and Iron Maiden. They might well be correct in their assumption. That relationship ended and then he was linked to Evan Rachel Wood while married to Dita Von Teese. He married Von Teese in November 2005. The wedding ceremony was non-denominational and took place in the couple’s home. A year later, on December 30th, 2006, Von Teese filed for divorce listing irreconcilable differences. However, it was around this time that the relationship between Manson and Evan Rachel Wood was made public. Von Teese later confirmed the affair in an interview. The divorce was finalized in 2007.

It is ironic that for someone who has based his career on being controversial and shocking, Manson has enjoyed tremendous success. Whether holding exhibitions of his art, performing or dealing with a rather long list of lawsuits, some brought against him by his fellow band members, Manson can still attract attention. His record sales might be on the decline but he has a solid fan base. They just might be what he needs to keep himself in the public eye. His star might have faded somewhat, but it has not gone just yet. Let us not forget, Brian Warner, aka Marilyn Manson, is after-all, an award-winning artist.
