Keeping Things Neat With A Little Home Organization

Monday 10 August 2009 @ 1:51 am

Getting your home orgainzed can be a crazy task, but it does not have to be. There are a few things you can do to make this process easier.

First thing is to set goals for each of your rooms. Make a seperate list for each room that includes each of the tasks you would like to see accomplished in a six week period. Say you are starting with your living room. The list you make might include things like organizing your dvds, getting your magazines sorted and tossing outdated ones, and setting up a space for your remotes with a remote caddy. Writing down your goals for each room will take away the push you feel to get all these things done at once. It will also make you feel less overwhelmed by your own home. This is especially true if you have new features in your home like a home theater.

What you define as a room being organized will differ from others, so you should decide now where you would like to be in terms of getting organized. If you have children, the organizational goal of a constantly spotless home is probably a little out of reach. Does organized mean a home where everything you need is accesable to you, but hidden from sight, or does it mean an office loaded down with neatly organized piles of paper and folders?

There are questions to ask yourself. What does and does not work in the room? What things in the room do you need and use on a regular basis? What is disorganized that you would like to fix? What has caused all this clutter to start with?

Make sure to get the opinion of your spouse, children, and/or roommates. This will ensure that everyone has a say to the organization, which will make it more likely that your home will stay organized when this project is completed.

Take some time to figure out what works for you. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is putting a system into your home that will not come easily to you. Just like diets that do not let you eat outside your home, an organizational system that takes constant work will fail. Say you throw your clothes on the floor. This is a bad habit, but instead of trying to fix this by putting a complicated four hamper system into the back of your closet, just get a wicker hamper and stick it where you throw your clothes normally.

Creating A Wonderful Outdoor Room

Monday 10 August 2009 @ 1:51 am

You might think that your yard is too small for an outdoor space, but you would probably be wrong. You can turn almost any yard, even a small one, into a lovely and inviting extension of your home. The first think to do is consider how you might use the space. That decision will effect everything from the fabrics you choose to how much privacy you will need.

Will the area be used for children, for adults, for play, or for entertaining? What is the weather like where you live? Do you live in a place that gets a lot of rain, snow, or wind? Is the weather ever changing, sometimes on short notice? If so, you will want to consider an outdoor space with a permanent cover or one that can be covered quickly to compensate for changing weather conditions. If it is very sunny, you might invest in an umbrella made of sun resistant fabric. If it is that sunny, you probably get mosquitoes, so you might invest in a mosquito net curtain and some repellent Tiki torches.

Just because your space is outdoors does not mean it cannot have the same structure as the interior of your home. This structure will give a sense of privacy and comfort in your home outside. The right privacy and cover would also open your entertainment options by allowing you to have a home theater outdoors. Ways to add walls outside vary. Wooden trellis is not hard to come by or expensive. If you anchor it into a planter, you can hang some small plants from it or grow vines to cover it, adding color and warmth. Sheer fabric panels around a porch will all but add a new room to your home.

You are probably reading this and watching the dollar signs add up in your head, but with a little creative effort and maybe some elbow grease, your budget will not blow itself out of proportion. Flea markets offer unique and inexpensive ways off adding character to your outdoor space. Copper wind chimes, unique ceramic bowls and planters, reclaimed fencing, trellis, and other outdoor furnishings can be acquired with very little effort. Watch your local online ads for people who are moving. Many will hold an open house to get rid of furnishings they cannot take, and outdoor furnishings are usually the first to be sacrificed for space sake. Now you have an outdoor space to be proud of.

Making An Organizational Plan For Your Home

Monday 10 August 2009 @ 1:03 am

Whatever room you want to organize, whether it is your bedroom or your home theater room, you need to start small. Begin in the room with the most clutter or the room you spend the most time. Remember to make a list of everything you want done in that room and attack the project one task at a time. If you are organizing your family room, you will find that things like gathering up all the books and magazines or adding a shelf to the room to hold things that get scattered will make all the difference in the world as well as motivate you to finish your project.

If organization is not your strong point, you might want to seek the help of a professional organizer. That is right, there are people that are employed for no other reason than to come into your home and take control of the clutter. These people can easily identify the issues that are keeping your home disorganized. They also have special tools for taking care of overlooked spots like the cords in your home theater. The National Association of Professional Organizers or NAPO has a website that can guide you to the right help.

Figure out ahead of time where you want to donate the things you are throwing out. Immediately setup large boxes to add things too. This will ensure you do not keep things that should be given away. Remember to get a receipt for your donations. Charity donations are tax deductible. Remember to check local churches where your donations go straight to people who need them. Also check battered women shelters to send your old work clothes to. Most of those organizations collect clothing to help women get back into the workforce. For things like prom dresses and other high end items, consider consignment so that you see some return on them. If your teen daughter has some clothes she never wears, there are places that will buy those things straight out. This will recoup some of the organizational budget.

Keep interruptions to a minimum. Turn off the phone ringer if you can and try to avoid organizing at a time where you have visitors. Registering at the do not call list will help cut down on telemarketer interruptions. Finding a quiet time to get your work done means you will get more work actually done rather than spending all day dealing with interruptions and ending the day tired and frustrated because you were moving all day and got nothing done.

Home Lighting Should Be Functional And Creative

Monday 10 August 2009 @ 12:00 am

Does your home have certain places that always seem dark and less inviting than they could be? This is common in many homes or apartments. When you do not get a lot of natural light during the day, lighting up a room might still be necessary even though it is daytime. At night it is always necessary to have good lighting. The question is, what kind of lighting do you need and want in your home? Most homes have ceiling lighting in each room, but sometimes it can be more than you want all of the time and this is where decorative lighting comes into play.

When you are doing things like reading or sewing, a glaring overhead light can be bothersome, so you will want something with a little more direction. The same can be said when you have guests over. If there is lounging around going on, you do not always want a glaring light either, especially when dining. But still, you must decide what type of lighting is most suitable. The way to figure this out is to try different kinds. There are floor lamps, table lamps, tract lighting, can lights, ceiling fans with lights, even lava lamps. What you put where is important.

A dining room table always needs a nice light fixture over it, but not necessarily one that is over powering. It is essential that the fixture you choose matches well with your decorations. You would not want an elaborate chandelier over a really modern looking table set. In a dining room there might be times when you want a little less light if the evening is on the more romantic side. This is when it is handy to have a dimmer switch. With a dimmer, you can have it as light or as dark as you like. This is also a nice feature to have in a bedroom.

Table lamps are usually stylish accessories as well as functional. You want them to go well with other room decoration and not overpower other accessories. They should make a statement, but should not necessarily be the focus in a room. When you have ceiling fans in a room, they can have the lights built in them. This will be a matter of choice. Sometimes having a separate ceiling fan and light fixture can make a ceiling too busy.

These days the amount of energy we use is so important for our environment as well as our budget. You might think that purchasing energy saver bulbs for the lighting in your home is a little pricey, but it is worth it in the long run because the bulbs are more energy efficient and last so much longer. You can replace the old light bulbs in your home as they burn out with new energy saving bulbs. Before you know it, you will have made the transition and your electric bill will begin to reflect the change.

Interior Designs For An Environmentally Friendly Home Office

Sunday 9 August 2009 @ 7:31 pm

In the United States alone, millions of people are working from home. Working from home means you should configure an area that is conducive to working. This further means getting the right lighting, right equipment and tools, and setting the right mood and tone. If you get the perfect combination of all these, you get a raised productivity with your work, therefore, better income. It is, however, an added bonus if your interior design skills work exactly towards your work preferences while designed with the environment in mind at the same time.

To help you come up with an environmentally-friendly home office, scour the home decor shops for energy-saving equipment. Say you are actually helping out the environment from not commuting to a brick-and-mortar office, thus, less carbon emissions. You can do that - and more - if you will conserve energy for powering your home office equipment through the use of power-saving equipment in your office.

For instance, consider maximizing the beauty of natural lighting by installing a solar mate panel. There are a lot of these in the stores and they are said to be capable of storing eight to eleven hours of power for the bulb. Other energy-efficient options include using desk lamps with compact fluorescent light bulbs or light-emitting diodes. Lighting equipment such as this is capable of using seventy-five percent less electricity than other conventional bulbs. Come to think of it, these desk lamps also come in very stylish designs and are very likely to give your home office a classy and professional look. You can also check for the energy star logo, which distinguishes equipment with less energy consumption levels.

For your personal computer or laptop, it can help to use standby plugs while you are away from the monitor. These plugs are powered in such a way that you can take control of your equipment, such as the PC, through wireless signals for up to thirty meters. Environmentally-friendly laptop chargers are also works-in-progress. This product, designed to use fuel cells, promises to enable laptops to run continuously for eight long hours a day for a month without the need to recharge.

For your communication needs, some digital cordless phones are also designed for great power-saving ability by using up to sixty percent less energy as compared to other regular cordless phones. Video-conferencing with web cameras will also help you get connected with your work partners without having to be mobile all the time.

As for your printing needs, it is a healthy practice to set your printer into ‘draft’ settings, while utilising both sides of the paper. Paper recycling helps save seventeen trees, forty-two thousand kilowatts of electric power and twenty-six liters of water. If you use home office equipment like recycled lever arch files, handling your documents and files will be a lot easier, too. Aside from keeping your files organized, it sets your documents into a well-sorted, ready-to-recycle kind of filing.

What Kind of Clean Do You Get from a Carpet Cleaner?

Sunday 9 August 2009 @ 5:39 pm

There are multiple cleaning methods in use today and people don’t really know what the differences are. The methods are listed below from the worst to the best types of cleaners:

Green Cleaning - This really gets my goat! Green cleaning hasn’t caught up to the current standards of cleaning yet. It does NOT work. NEVER use a green cleaner in your home. There is significant evidence that green cleaning is causing the uprise of illnesses in our hospitals and schools. Have you heard of MRSA (pronounced: MERSA)? Do we really want to open ourselves up to the possibility that the conditions could be replicated in our own homes? I don’t think so.

Dry Cleaning - Companies like Chem-Dry sell their services based on their ability to give you dry carpet quicker. People like this option because it gets them back to their lives a lot faster. There are a couple disadvantages to this type of clean:

1. Most dry-cleaning companies won’t vacuum the carpet. They depend on you to do that but they won’t tell you that in most cases.

2. Their cleaning method simply uses an absorbent cotton pad that brushes across the carpet. This only pushes the dirt on the top of the carpet to the baseboards and does not get into the deep down recesses of the carpet.

Encapsulation Cleaning - This is a dry cleaning method that uses a chemical that actually “encapsulates” the dirt into little balls that just get vacuumed up the next day after the cleaning. In certain circumstances this is a good option but only in the following circumstance:

This should only be used on commercial-grade, glue-down carpets. Also it should only be used as a “maintenance” cleaning procedure. It is ineffective on heavily-soiled carpets.

Steam Cleaning - This is by far the best, most thorough cleaning method available today. It cleans deep down. It kills germs and bacteria (with appropriate cleaners). It uses extreme heat to increase the cleanliness of your carpets. It can even leave your carpet drier than a Dry-Cleaner.

When choosing a carpet cleaner, ask which method they use and why. If the cleaner can’t tell you why their type of clean is the best for your current situation, they likely aren’t the best option for you. Look for a steam cleaner for the best results, and the best chances for dislodging tough stains. Steam cleaners are great for both heavy and maintenance cleaning jobs.

Five Hot Interior Design Trends

Sunday 9 August 2009 @ 5:39 pm

Are you considering redecorating a room or your entire house? Wondering what the latest trends in interior design are? The five biggest trends of interior design are currently focused on individuality - creating an environment that expresses who you are. Environmentally friendly choices, rooms inspired by your unique personality, eclectic luxury, mixing cultures and styles are the five big interior design trends today.

One interior design trend that is catching on is the desire to be eco-friendly. Consumers are becoming more and more aware of the environment and are taking steps to protect it. Generally speaking, people are looking for green products, products that are made from renewable resources. However, it is no longer enough for a company to simply say their products are green. Consumers are forcing companies to prove their claims and are purchasing the products that truly are environmentally friendly.

A second hot interior design trend is to create rooms that are uniquely you. People have many facets to their personalities and are decorating accordingly. Perhaps you are interested in music, outdoors, and art. You may chose a framed Mozart, several plants, and a mural of a jungle scene. People are not forcing their entire home into one theme or style. Each room is an individualistic collection of styles, themes, and ideas.

Eclectic luxury is a third interior design trend. Throw pillows and other accessories like art are being mixed and matched to create an interior design that celebrates several eras and provides a touch of luxury to life. Luxurious materials like silk or velvet are being used for throw pillows, coupled with a bit of framed art. Textured area rugs are used over wood floors to create a look of luxury at a reasonable price.

Multicultural inspired pieces are a fourth hot interior design trend. Technology has created a much smaller world, and created a global community. Consumers are embracing the ideas and traditions of other cultures and carry that over to their interior design choices. Chinese embroidery pillows coupled with a Mexican embroidery rug is a fairly common sight in homes today.

A fifth hot interior design trend is to mix contemporary with classic styling to create your own sanctuary. People are taking one room in their homes, mixing styles, inspired by their own unique tastes to create a personal sanctuary. They are making one room that creates a sense of perfect relaxation, peacefulness, and calmness to unwind after a long day in the rest of the world.

The biggest trend in interior design is to create rooms that are suited to your taste, personality, and ideas. Your interior design choices are meant to create rooms or a home that is comfortable for you and your family. Decorate accordingly. Your home and your interior design choices should reflect your interests, personality, ideas, and lifestyle. What the hot trends of interior design are comes down to what you like. Interior design trends are simply what most people are doing, not necessarily what you should do.

Why Original Interior Design Products Matter

Sunday 9 August 2009 @ 5:20 pm

Everyone wants to indulge in bargains, huge mark downs and big sales especially when buying home decorations. Interior designs come in a large variety and there are a million of these home decors that can make up for the overall theme that you want to project. Some may resort to classic design, some may fancy contemporary, and some may go for modern motifs. The only downside about trying to ’save more’ is the tendency to ‘get less’ of what your money well spent is worth if you are not vigilant about copy cats.

When you check out bargains and sales, you are likely to come across a lot of imitations and fakes. There are products that claim authenticity on a certain label, but when they come in cheaper versions, you should be particularly wary. Apart from the fact that you are purchasing an unauthorized copy, you are most likely to suffer from poor quality and zero warranties.

As a wise consumer, you should take it upon yourself to make an informed decision on purchasing items for your interior design. You can easily spot imitations if you have quite a good background and profile of your brand of choice. First off, you should have an idea on how much the original ones usually cost so that you will not be tricked into believing that the one on dubious sale is not something to be skeptic about. An Eames Lounger chair for instance, will cost you $4,500 in terms of a maximum price. If you get a cheaper version, it could be possible that the product is a counterfeit. If this happens, you are not protected against poor make and material. Authorized designs by reputable names in the interior design industry will not get you in this kind of trouble because you are assured that your product of choice is made by well trained men who are dedicated to their craft. Authorized designs are also known for lasting use and durability. Eventually, their products also become prized possessions because theirs are products that appreciate in value over time, especially if they become extinct in shops.

How to Spot the Counterfeit Product

Now, “How do I spot a counterfeit product?” you ask. You should shop for products only at authorized retailers. Products that go with phrases like ‘reproduction’ or ‘inspired by’ are clear manifestations of imitations. Be very detail oriented and notice differences or semblances with the original product that you should have researched prior to purchasing it. Take into account the weight, dimensions and other distinguishing features. Most importantly, do not give in to impulse buying. It really helps if you have straight facts to rely on when you check for original interior design products. To be pretty certain, you can also get in touch with the manufacturer to request a product serial number. This ID is unique and is one prime distinguishing identity of your product of choice. Recall that it is your well deserved right to enjoy the goodness of original chairs and desks for your personal space, and anything else in your home interior design.

From Novice To Professional Interior Designer In An Afternoon

Sunday 9 August 2009 @ 5:19 pm

Television and marketing professionals want us to buy things for our homes. From large sofas to the best dinnerware and cookware with which to entertain our friends, they want us to have everything that will make us comfortable. Television has made interior design easily accessible. It also has lay people creating homes and spaces just like the professionals.

We can see the effects that reflect these ideas in television commercials and we are lured by the idea of space creating comfort for us. Paint companies, art galleries and furniture stores play to this facet as much as they can. A special color of paint in a child’s room that has the ability to calm or furniture that welcomes you home after a long days work are ways to stream information on the use of interior design ideas.

Cable and satellite television has made accessing professional assistance much easier. Interior Designers welcome the opportunity to teach everyday people how to dress a window or accessorize their bathroom. Each day’s lesson is a small peek into the world of interior design.

Interior designers are creative and have the ability to create beautiful and inviting rooms out of simple everyday items. They teach us how to mix fabrics and color, or the best way to let light into a room. We are shown how to purchase and arrange furniture so that family members and guests feel relaxed and comfortable.

Interior design is geared towards the feeling a room or house creates. By adding a few accessories throughout a room, character is created and the room becomes an interesting place to be in. Small framed pictures hiding in a row of books draw our attention. Flowers from a picnic many years ago hidden in the family photo album illicit smiles and conversation. Walls devoted to the growth of children display the love and pride parents show in their children.

Lessons from an interior designer give the beginner decorator the knowledge and confidence to do the work themselves, and bring their own homes to life with little effort - and without the cost of a formal education. Professionals imparting their knowledge at the cost of an hour a day build a solid following, and keeps everyday people coming back for more information and thus continuing their education. Not only does the professional give valuable information on the process, they provide the information on how to purchase the appropriate product(s) for the project.

Many a person would like to create little replicas of heaven in their own homes. Not having the knowledge or education can lead them to frustration, and ultimately being unhappy in their own homes. Television brings professional interior designers right into their living rooms at no monetary cost. The only cost is an open mind, willingness to learn, and information on where to find the appropriate materials. The advice that the novice receives will put them on the path to whatever project has their current attention. They also have the professional to guide them through every step of the interior design make-over.

Using Lighting To Create Interior Design

Sunday 9 August 2009 @ 5:19 pm

When deciding to redecorate your home, you go through many ideas before you choose what you want to do. You look online and in magazines for new ideas to inspire you and give you just the plan you need. One of the most overlooked facets of creating stunning interior design is not your paint color, it’s not your flooring choice, or even your accessories, but it’s your lighting.

Lighting can create moods in a room, highlight decorative pieces, artwork or plants, and even provide color in an otherwise colorless room. Depending on the lighting fixtures you choose, they can even be a piece of brilliant artwork on display, all on their own.

To create moods in a room, the first thing you have to do is to determine what mood you want. If you are replacing the lights in a library, you want good lighting for reading, but you also want the room to be comfortable. Floor lamps are a wonderful choice here, as are pendulum lights. Pendulum lights can hang in small clusters over a couple of comfortable chairs, giving light directly on what you need to see but won’t be bright and antiseptic looking. Nice shades on floor lamps that can cast a warm glow to a room, yet provide light right where you need it, creating a relaxing atmosphere.

If you are changing the interior design in a child’s room, try more retro appearing lighting fixtures. Many of these are available in a wide variety of colors and shapes that can increase your child’s imagination. It has been shown that surrounding a child with items that are not the usual (in this case an overhead light with a square glass) but rather with bright colors and shapes, like the retro 70’s art deco lights, can increase a child’s creativity. Believed to be due to the way color and shape stimulates the brain, this is a fun way to create an interior design both you and your child will adore.

For lights in a kitchen, you want to make sure they are bright enough to see what you are doing, easy to keep clean, and it is best if they are up out of the way. There are many interior design choices available for lighting for kitchens. Recessed lights are nice for over stoves or under cabinets where you would be working. This is generally called task lighting. A chandelier or pendulum lights are fabulous over the dining table, and create a wonderful accent piece. You may also want to include a small table lamp if you have an area of counter space that is generally used for looking through recipe books, or perhaps children’s homework.

With all the wonderful lighting options, wrought iron, colored glass, satin polished nickel and the rest, there is the perfect lighting option to create exactly what you want to finish off the interior design in your room. Have fun with it, be creative, and enjoy the mood you create.
