There are two main things you have to learn when operating an MLM online business. One is how to generate leads and the other is how to qualify leads. Master these two skills and everything will follow.

Internet statistics show that only around 2-4% of people who visit a site will click on a link that will make money for the website’ owner. That already-small number shrinks further to 1% when it comes to those who will actually buy a product. This means that the more people you can entice to visit your site, the more money you will make.
Obviously, what you want to accomplish with your site is to reach as much people as you can, letting them know about the specific business opportunity that is available through you. EBay is making Summer 2009 the season of changes. As EBay has continued to scrutinise its operation, it has been making changes that will continue the business along to the path to become less a marketplace for everyman and more an established marketplace for offseason and overstock new products.
EBay started in 1995 as an auction site, used primarily by non-professionals sellers to get rid of used items. As the EBay concept caught on and its sales began to grow exponentially, the selling population grew from virtual garage sale operators to more established retail businesses trading in more organised business formats.
Retail businesses began to emerge, selling overstock and other new items that could be obtained at a low price and auctioned or eventually straight out sold, using the Buy It Now option at a profit to the retailer as well as an advantageous price for the buyer.
As EBay came to understand this evolving marketplace and recognise where the greatest opportunity resided, its management began to mold EBay’s policies to favour its preferred model and plan for the future. For EBay sellers, the continuing rule changes have sometimes made it difficult to participate, but since EBay boasts hundreds of millions of registered users, it is a marketplace that cannot be denied.
The newest changes have been hinted at by EBay management but not fully announced. In general the changes will continue EBay on the path it has been traveling for some time, to move away from the occasional seller in order to support established retailers with consistent availability of new products. But, some of the changes are really good for everyone.
Customer Feedback Ratings Change
EBay has a new way to calculate whether or not a merchant is providing sufficient customer service. eBay already asks every buyer to rate his or her experience on a scale of 1 to 5, based on factors such as shipping time and a product living up to its billing.
EBay used to insist that its sellers had to receive reviews averaging out to 4.3 in order to meet the sites minimum standards. This system created a good deal of animosity at the time because sellers were no longer able to rate customers as well, leaving sellers open to the whim of buyers who could not be satisfied or new buyers who did not understand the rules. Many sellers felt that the 4.3 point level was too high, suggesting that a rating such as 4 should be acceptable.
Now eBay is shifting the focus just onto really bad customer experiences. Starting in October, eBay says sellers cannot have 1 or 2 ratings for more than 3% of their transactions. In April 2010, standards will get even stricter, with no more than 1% of 1s or 2s allowed. EBay reasons that a rating of 1 or 2 is an indication of a problem and it is much easier to avoid the really bad experiences than it is to attract all 5s.
Search Algorithm Transparency
EBay also introduced changes to the best match search algorithm it uses to help shoppers find listings, including placing more emphasis on relevant titles and less emphasis on items that get lots of clicks but nobody ends up buying.
The company is offering software to sellers to explain why their listings are or are not showing up at the top of eBay’s search results. The Search Visibility Tool, explains what sorts of attributes in a listing are helping or hurting and what the seller can do to improve ranking.

The debate rages on. Do webpages with nothing but text generate more sales, or do webpages featuring both text and images (e.g. illustrations, photos, etc) and/or other graphical or multi-media elements (e.g. videos) convert more?
There are many schools of thought on this subject. Some people say they get more clicks and sales on text-heavy webpages, while others swear by including images, videos and other graphical or multi-media elements. Who is right?
As you might suspect, there is no one universally correct answer. You might find that a text-heavy webpage generates higher conversions for one offer in one niche… whereas graphical or multi-media based webpages convert better for another offer in another niche. The only way to find out what works best for you is to split-test one type of webpage against another.
Nevertheless, a number of Internet marketers have said that webpages including videos, images and graphical elements have resulted in significantly more conversions than pages with nothing other than text. One marketing company studied this phenomenon and found that including pictures in a webpage increased sales by 25 to 100 percent.
Intuitively it makes sense that online stores, for example, will do better by displaying images of the products they’re selling. Where consumers are likely to base part of their purchase decision on seeing the product, it almost goes without saying that you’ll want to display images of that product.
Similarly, if consumers want to see the product in action, then a video demonstrating the product should theoretically lift conversions. Also, it seems logical that videos would be effective in eliciting greater trust. This is one of the likely reasons for why a number of Internet marketers have found that videos of them discussing or explaining an information product, or showing their results, or videos of happy customers giving testimonials, have all resulted in higher conversions.
Still, some successful direct response Internet marketing companies are notable for not using many, if any, multi-media elements in their webpages and opting, instead, for a classic text-heavy sales letter. In particular, some of the major companies behind paid newsletters in the investment, diet and money-making niches continue to use nothing more than a compelling headline and copy to sell their products. Are these companies behind the times, or do they know something everyone else does not?
I suggest the latter: but it’s not so much that such companies necessarily know ‘the’ answer to selling all kinds of products, but that they know the answer to selling their kinds of products. Which just underscores the need to test your offers and webpages - only then will you really know what works best for you.

As an online retailer, you have several ways to substitute for that physical experience, e.g., product descriptions, product photos, product videos, audio information.
In a bricks and mortar store, a purchaser buys a product because he or she can:
- Pick it up, examine the quality, feel the weight and texture, essentially experience the product.
- Try it out, e.g., take a roll down the aisle on a scooter, watch the image of a high definition TV, and take a few test strokes with a golf club.
- Ask questions and get advice from a salesperson.
- Carry it home that day.
The online retailer cannot match all of the advantages of a bricks and mortar store, but you do offer some special advantages of your own. Your customer:
- Can shop 24/7.
- Does not have to spend money or time driving to a store.
- Gets to shop in their at-home clothes (or none at all!)
- Does not have to haul packages around.
- Often saves money on the item because the online retailer has far fewer overhead expenses to roll into the price.
- Can avoid salespeople who are more annoying than helpful.
These are pretty strong advantages but they still do not make up for the all important opportunity to experience the product (unless it’s a well know product, in which case your task will be even harder because you will most likely be competing on price only).
As an online retailer, you have several ways to substitute for that physical experience. Every site, even the most basic, has product descriptions and photos so let us focus for now on the first of those, the product description.
Think about your product write ups. Are they the typical functional descriptions? e.g.: “Six shades of brown eye shadow in a snap lock case with a sponge applicator.”
Or, maybe a bit more interesting? e.g.: “Six earth tone eye shadow shades beautifully encased in a see-through carrier with specially designed sponge applicator.”
You are probably thinking that the second description sounds pretty good. Yes, it does. But it can be better. Let us start by thinking about what your customer is looking for when she shops for eye shadow. She:
- Wants to be pretty.
- Probably wants to look younger or compliment her youth.
- Wants to be fashionable.
- Probably wants the color to match or complement eye or hair color.
- Wants the packaging to reflect her desire to be pretty and youthful.
How can we recreate the eye shadow description to speak more directly to your customer, demonstrating that your product will meet her needs, even if she has not actually thought about her needs as thoroughly as we just described them? How about:
“Specially designed to showcase your coloring, these six shades including bronze, smoky cinnamon, mocha latte and more are turning heads on the fashion runway and they will do the same for you, featured in an upscale, see-through carrying case with its perfectly applied every time sponge applicator.”
Now that sounds like eye shadow that is worth taking a look at. What else can you add? If it is a bit pricey, you will want to emphasize the value. For example, add:
“Developer XYZ Products is known for its rich formulations that never cake, change color or smudge so you will look photo shoot perfect all day long.”
Whether you sell motor oil or ecologically safe cleaners or designer jewelry, take the time to tell your products story in the description.

All too commonly, businesses get seduced by a couple of dangerous misconceptions regarding search engine optimization (SEO). The result can often be high rankings and more website traffic, but no increase in sales or profits.
The first major misconception is that SEO should be solely based on getting the highest rankings on a search engine results page (SERP) for any seemingly relevant keywords or phrases in a given market. In other words, you should strive to have your webpage rank as the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd result on the SERP for even the most obscure keywords relating to your business.
Here’s the reality: you are in business to make money, not to play a ‘ranking’ game. Unless the keywords you are ranking highly for are search queries used by qualified prospects, high search engine listings are largely useless.
The second big misconception is that the whole point of ranking highly on a SERP is to increase traffic to your website. Again, however, getting tons of traffic to your website is useless if those web visitors do not buy anything (now or ever)! Yet, this can happen all too easily when you and/or your SEO consultant focuses on increasing the quantity, rather than quality, of your search engine traffic.
Fortunately, both these problems can be avoided by throwing away the misconceptions that the goal of SEO is getting high rankings and increasing traffic, and realizing, instead, that SEO is aimed at increasing sales and profits. Armed with this attitude you are better able to distinguish between just any keywords and the specific keywords likely to bring qualified leads to your website.
Identifying these keywords will, of course, require an ongoing analysis of keywords versus the type of traffic generated. Through trial and error, with an eye on the bottom line, you (or your SEO firm) will be able to isolate those ‘money making’ words and phrases on which you can now focus your SEO efforts.
A useful measure of the value of a keyword is the visitor value per keyword - in other words the value of a web visitor generated from that keyword. Visitor value or value per visitor (VPV) is defined as the average net profit per visitor. When tied to a keyword it’s the VPV for a visitor who came to your website via that particular keyword. It may sound complex, but you can work this out with the help of some of the website analytics and tracking tools available today.
In fact, you might even implement a paid search marketing campaign to help identify the more valuable keywords, since the analytics provided by, for example, Google Adwords, can relatively easily yield the VPV per keyword. Just keep in mind that you are not strictly comparing ‘apples to apples’ when applying insights drawn from a paid search campaign to your SEO efforts.
In any case, the fact remains that unless your search engine optimization campaign is focused on boosting sales and profits, then it’s ultimately useless. For that reason, SEO should not really be about accomplishing high rankings for any old keywords… it should be about getting high rankings for high VPV keywords.

In many ways, it is just very easy to become an online business entrepreneur. For under dollar 1,000, you can get an e-commerce site up and running and either buy some inventory and follow a drop shipping strategy.
For that very reason, there are thousands of people every day who have decided to do just that and they are all out there trying to make their fortune on the Internet, just like all the hyped up courses and articles tell them they can.
You can also find hundreds of articles that tell you about the top ten mistakes that beginners make and the top fifteen things you must do to be successful and most of them have something valuable to say. But, we think that there are a few issues that are more important than others and we would like to emphasize those.
Figure out your competitive advantage (your edge)
It is not enough to find a product you want to sell, buy it at a low price and mark it up for resale. Why? Because that is exactly what everyone else is doing. You need to figure out why someone should buy from you rather than from someone else. Is your product better? Less expensive? Comes with all the right accessories? Sold on a site with wonderful how-to information? Sold on a site with an expert in residence?
What is your sales pitch?
Look for a smaller, not larger market
This is a critical and extremely common mistake. People get excited about selling online because of the millions and millions of people who are online looking to buy something. Yes, that is true, but there are also millions of people looking to sell things and it is very difficult to get your business and product seen in all of that Internet noise. Plus, the larger the market, the bigger the players. It is very difficult to compete in the huge markets.
You want to find the target or niche market that would really like to buy your particular product from your business. Chances are, there are more than enough people in that market to make your business worthwhile. You just need to find those people and convince them. But, it is a lot easier to find people who are searching for vintage nativity sets in wood than try to attract the attention of people searching for Christmas figurines.
Budget for marketing
It is way too easy to get caught up in the technology of your site and forget about the fact that it is all a huge waste of time unless someone can find it.
Finding your site has everything to do with marketing, and some parts of marketing cost money. Recognize that reality and plan for it if you would like to have a shot at being successful.
Build credibility
Giving away your credit card information on the Internet is scary. People need to have to trust a website to be willing to do that. That is why so many people use well-trusted sites like Amazon.com and eBay: there are protections in place.
Give people the tools to be able to trust you. Put your address and phone number in your contact information. Provide an email for communication. Write a bio for yourself and place it on the website. The more people know about you, the more they will trust your site.

Finding a niche that you enjoy and that really has targeted website traffic sometimes is a show stopper.
Too many people choose a niche and think they are going to make money online because they are excited about it. Well, there is more to it than that. Your excitement doesn’t necessarily mean there are profits.
Well, let’s put a stop to that! Here’s some real ideas that help you brainstorm your passions so you are successful finding a niche that is profitable.
So, I am not telling you that happiness is found in the money. In fact, all I am talking about is being in business, which - by default - must be profitable - and doing it with something you are likely to enjoy. Not everything you enjoy is profitable!
So what do you do to narrow down your passions for profit?
So, let’s think of ways to brainstorm your passions. Start by doing this:
- Write down a list of your hobbies or activities that you enjoy most
- You can include in that list things you love to talk about, or participate in, or read endlessly about.
- Next to each hobby or activity, right down a few principle things you know a lot about for that subject.
Then think about it. Which of these do I get the most fun and enjoyment from. Number them in the order of your preference. And do give them all a preference ranking, even if you think they are equal to you.
Then think about it more. Which of these topics would you really love seeing an eBook or audio, or video series with your name on it? (notice I didn’t say you would love personally making - cause there are ways to have these products and you don’t even have to make them, yet you get your name on them).
It’s important to remember, that in this step of finding a niche you are only identifying the niches of potential interest. I will help you analyze your choices in the future, so you can pick the most profitable. So, it is important that you brainstorm 5 to 10 so you end up with something that you will enjoy AND is profitable.
This is the first step of your 7-step process to finding a profitable niche. Remember, you are looking for a profitable niche that will bring tons of hungry, eager, profit paying tarted traffic.

A recent study of search engine users indicates that the greater your presence on a search engine results page (SERP), the more likely will a search engine user be to see your listing. This, in turn, means a greater probability of people clicking on your search listings, yielding you more search engine traffic. As you can imagine, such results underscore the desirability of having multiple search engine entries.
In the research study in question, the researchers monitored where on the results page the research subjects’ eyes focused, how long they spent reading the listings, and what listings the subjects were more likely to click. One of the most profound results of the study was that a typical search engine user spent roughly 0.7 seconds reading each listing on the search engine results page (SERP). This is less than a second per entry per page!
The second most striking observation was that search engine users spend minimal time on the right side of the search engine results - where the paid advertisements are typically located. The exception to this was where search engine users were more advanced in the buying cycle i.e. the closer they were to actually buying a product or service rather than gathering information about it.
In fact, the research revealed there to be five general ways people scan the SERPs based on where they are in the buying process:
– The Quick Click
– The Linear Scan
– The Golden Triangle Scan
– The Deliberate Scan
– The Pickup Search
While it’s beyond the scope of this article to discuss these scanning patterns in detail, the important lesson to be gleaned from the research is that multiple search engine listings are crucial to increasing your odds of being within ’scanning’ range (whatever the type of scan used) and therefore having your listing clicked on, and your webpage visited.
Furthermore, even if you have multiple organic search engine results on a results page, it may also pay to be included in the paid listings as well. So while you may have heard or thought that focusing both a pay-per-click ad campaign and a search engine optimization campaign on the same keywords was a waste of money, the opposite may be true.
Plain and simple, by having more positions on the search engine results page you are more likely to have your business, product or brand noticed and clicked on. This is particularly important where you are targeting keywords that are more likely to be used by prospects in the latter stages of the buying cycle. In any case, the overall principle remains: the more visible you are, the more likely you are to be seen!
