All call centers have some commonalities- they are fast paced; they are busy, noisy and require multi-tasking. Most obviously, they sound like a lot of talking. What you may not hear is the listening. In a call center environment, listening skills are priority. As an agent, if you cannot hear what the caller is saying, you cannot proceed effectively in the call. Whether it is a complaint or a thank you, the customer is providing you with the necessary information to be successful and to make your department successful. Demonstrate your listening skills along with the following in an interview and you are sure to be offered the position.

Individual skills:
Patience and tolerance will be a required skill for every call that you take. For an interview, especially in a complaint center environment, be prepared to give examples of a particularly trying situation, how you were able to smooth the situation and calm the customer to promote effective communication.

Problem solving or resolution skills may be the main focus of your duties. Again, examples of a particularly difficult situation and how you were able to resolve it shows the prospective employer that you already possess and utilize this skill. Be sure to stress in your example that you were able to satisfy the customer within the guidelines of the company. This way the interviewer is at ease that you are able to negotiate and will not readily ‘give away the store’ to get out of a difficult situation.

Team skills:
You may realize the importance of communication skills when taking a call, but communication skills are an equally important part of working as a team. There are differences in the way people communicate. Your job here is to determine the best way to relay information or request assistance to or from a co-worker. This may require learning whether a contact prefers a phone call or an email or the best time of day to reach them.

When possible, it is advisable to be able to provide to a prospective employer documentation of previous accomplishments. These should be easy to obtain from current or prior employers. Most call centers have a method of tracking productivity for individual employees and can include this in a letter of recommendation. They may have information such as punctuality and time logs, the number of calls taken, average length of the calls, etc. If individual information is not available, ask for departmental statistics to show the effectiveness of the team that you were part of.

The ability to multi-task cannot be stressed enough. Call center environments almost always include more duties than answering the phone. Additional tasks may include providing verifications for the caller or others in your team, completing paperwork, or documenting the details of the call. Explain to you interviewer environments in which you have been required to perform a number of tasks simultaneously.

In a call center environment, it is easy to feel that it is just you and the customer and sort-of zone out the rest of the department activity. In fact, this is a skill, and a useful one to have. It is important in such a busy environment to be able to remain focused. Care should be taken not to lose site of the fact that you are part of a team who is working together for a common cause. Always be available and willing to pitch in and help a co-worker or to pick up the slack somewhere else. Show this willingness and the above skills to your interviewer and they will see you as the perfect fit for the job.

Everyone knows what politics at work means… It’s the unfair stereotypes and biases that exist in the workplace. Many see a power outside of our range of control and that at times we must submit to this power.

Finally the next step is to actually confront the problem, this can be difficult and may be something you don’t wish to do but it will not fix itself. The longer a problem and difficult behaviour continues, the harder it will be to put an end to it.

Is Texas Handcuffed by Employment Non-Compete Restrictions?

Too often employees come to me with a dilemma. They lost their jobs, accepted a modest one-or-two month severances and now have job offers from companies in competition with their former employers. “Do you have a non-compete agreement with your former employer?” I ask. “Yes, but I heard that those non-compete agreements are not worth the paper that they are written on, and besides, it is the only job offer I have,” they say. “Sorry, you heard wrong!” I regretfully inform them.

It is a common misconception here in Texas that non-compete agreements are void and unenforceable. In its most recent case on the subject, the Texas Supreme Court ruled, that in certain circumstances, non-compete agreements are enforceable.

As a result, although an employee may lose her job, the employer with a non-compete agreement will prevent her from walking across the street to work for a competitor. “What happened?” you ask, “I thought Texas believed in competition?” The short answer is that a lot has happened.

In 1989, the Texas Legislature enacted its first covenant-not-to-compete statute for employees. Texas businesses wanted the statute because it allegedly protected company techniques, procedures, and customer lists from competitors. It also protected employers who pay for training employees only to lose the employee to a competitor. But subsequent Supreme Court decisions rendered such contracts unenforceable until 2006. That year the Texas Supreme Court, much maligned after a UT Professor’s study revealed that the Texas Supreme Court decides against individuals 87 percent of the time in personal injury cases, enforced a non-compete. This changed the landscape.

Now when employees saddled with non-compete agreements walk down the street for jobs with competitors, their former employers sends a team of lawyers into courtrooms to obtain temporary restraining orders against both the employees and the new employers, to prevent them from competing. Texas courts routinely grant these restraining orders.

Texas is not alone in excepting from antitrust laws limited non-compete provisions. But in other states like California, home of Silicon Valley, these contracts are unenforceable.

Indeed, it is now conventional wisdom among scholars that non-compete agreements restrict employee mobility and innovation. In 1965, an area called Route 128 in Massachusetts had approximately three times more total technology employment than Silicon Valley. Massachusetts, like Texas, enforces non-competes. By 1975, Silicon Valley tripled Route 128 in technology employment. Scholars blame the non-competes.

As a result, Massachusetts legislators recently introduced a bill making illegal any written or oral employment agreement that prohibits a person’s ability to accept any type of employment or independent contractor work, for any period of time after an employment relationship has ended. Violators would be liable for the affected employee’s attorney’s fees. Texas should consider enacting the same legislation.
As it now stands, non-compete agreements are often forced upon employees who are at a substantial bargaining disadvantage. Texas technological leaders, CEOs, politicians, and courts should realize that non-competes stifle innovation and competition in our state. The entrepreneurial employees in Texas do not have the same rights as their counterparts in Silicon Valley. Besides, I’m convinced that management treats its employees better if they are working in a free market.
