Why Mountain Biking And The Athertons Are Synonymous

Tuesday 4 August 2009 @ 5:35 pm

In July 2009, British Cycling announced the full teams for the Mountain Bike World Championships which are to be held in Canberra, Australia from 1st to 7th September 2009. It is no surprise to see the Atherton family featuring in the announcement with the two boys in a variety of categories riding commencal bikes.

The mountain biking category is one that has won the hearts of youngsters and the not so youngsters in Britain. This culture seemed to take hold in the early 1990s although the bikes from this time look a little dated by today’s standards. With big design improvements by 1997 the mountain biking culture had really taken a grip in the UK.

Today it is proudly represented by people such as the Atherton family. They make up the Animal Commencal team which was formed back in 2007 with three of Britain’s hottest DH riders, Dan, Gee and Rachel Atherton, signed up. Back then the team piloted the Madison distributed Commencal Supreme DH Team bikes which were kitted out with plenty of Shimano components, DT Swiss wheels and Fox forks.

The years that have followed show that the Atherton family have come up trumps in racing and are also ideal as they have been superb at presentation. Their story started back in a small Devon village where the two brothers, Dan and Gee, and sister, Rachel, spent their earlier years riding bikes of all types. The three of them shared a mutual taste for speed and adventure.

The family moved in 2000 to North Wales to find more suitable terrain, which turned out to be a good decision with the two brothers being National Champions in 2004. The three of them since then has gone on to win World Championships, World Cups and also European titles. The Athertons have fans whom follow them all over the world.

Rachel became the first woman to win the Elite Women UCI Downhill World Championship in June 2008 aged only 20 at the time, and with an impressive margin of 12 seconds. She also won the BBC Midlands Sports Personality of the Year, and was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year 2008.

One of the newer design elements to help bikers such as the Athertons is the PST concept of Commencal which came about, as often some of the most important things in life do, from a simple observation. PST stands for Perfect Size Tubing.

A bike rider’s weight will increase according to their height, which means that extra stress is caused from a rider’s weight are higher on the larger sized frames. On these larger sized frames tube deflections are even more important because of longer tube lengths especially on the front triangle. This becomes even more significant on the seat tube and top tube as they are in a direct relationship with 2/3 of the rider’s weight through the seat.

By using this concept for new commencal models such as Meta 4 and Meta 5 frames, the set and top tube diameter have been increased and as well so have the seat post diameter for the large and x large frame sizes. PST greatly improves load distribution which leads to increased stiffness, comfort and efficiency.

Tour de France - Not Only About Cycling

Wednesday 22 July 2009 @ 11:21 pm

The Tour de France is the world’s grandest bicycle race in the world, spanning more than 2,200 miles of French countryside. Professional cyclists around the world consider travel to France to take part in the race as their biggest stage in their cycling careers. It is the one cycling event where media outlets deliver the event to millions of watching cycling fans.

The Tour de France lasts for twenty-three days. Each stage of the race features picturesque French towns that represent the beauty of the countryside. Many of the tourists go on holidays to watch the race and enjoy the French countryside. In some years, the race routes cross the border of Spain or Italy. You can find generous travel packages that can take you to a wide variety of destinations. Tour de France packages are the best way to reserve hotel rooms near the race route.

There are many reasons why this race is considered the most prestigious cycling race in the world. For one, it is the oldest bicycle race in the world. No other cycling tour predated the Tour de France, so we can say that all the rules, legs, and events of cycling tours originated from this race. It is also the most grueling race and the most mentally demanding race of any athletic event. Cyclists have to ride the steep Alps and go through meandering roads to finish the race.

Tour packages for the Tour de France are very popular during the French summer. These tours usually have arrangements for group accommodations partnered with the top chain hotels in the country. Extensive packages also offer booking from independent and family-run hotels.

The race passes through the top destinations in the country like Marseille. Marseille is one of the top tourist cities in France and the second largest city next to Paris. Although it may not possess the romantic attraction of Paris, you will find a real sense of happiness in the city. Meanwhile Montpellier is a great town for short hikes and outdoor activities. You can find different markets in the streets of Montpellier selling clothes and food.

The principality of Monaco is another highlight of the Tour de France route. Monaco is situated between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. This country greets the tours’ guests with great food and endearing camaraderie. Other top tourist destinations highlighted by the Tour de France include Barcelon, Brignoles, Besancon, and Annensy.

What You Need To Know About Bicycle Seats

Tuesday 9 June 2009 @ 2:08 pm

No matter why you’re looking at a new bike seat, you’ve probably found that there are a lot of choices out there. All kinds of models and types are available, so you’ll have the opportunity to find the seat that’s best suited to you. However, the sheer volume of options can also get fairly confusing. Here’s a look at some of the most common types of bicycle seat available on the market to help you decide which one will be best for you and your bike.

Race seats or road bike seats are very common on bikes intended for sports. They’re not so much about comfort, but more about improving speed and riding efficiency. These light seats are usually pretty narrow, with hollow seat rails that take weight off the frame. Don’t expect much padding here - these are seats that are all about a fast ride. They encourage leaning forward, which is expected on racing bikes. However, for many people, they’re just plain uncomfortable.

Comfort seats are the obvious answer to this. They’re wider and softer than a race seat, with relatively broad noses that won’t cause as much discomfort in the pubic bone. These seats are usually pretty heavy, and are often sprung underneath to offer a smoother ride. They work best on bikes with handlebars that are higher than the seat, and for people who like an upright ride. They’re not the right choice for speed, since they encourage a non-aerodynamic posture and are rather heavy. Choose this type of seat when you’ll be commuting or running errands on your bike. These are the most common seat on classic or vintage bikes, and come in a number of different materials, including old fashioned leather.

Gel seats are a more modern alternative to the older style comfort seat. They come in almost all shapes and styles and are designed to reduce groin and sit bone irritation. They include a gel cushion inside that keeps you from developing discomfort. These can be a real lifesaver for people who like to ride over longer distances, when fatigue and strain can build up. Seats also come in versions designed for men or women, due to the different pelvis shapes between the sexes. Women’s seats are usually shorter and wide, while men’s are narrower and long.

This short guide to bicycle seats should help you narrow down the choices and decide which kind of seat will be best for you. Look at the kind of bike you ride and the kind of riding you prefer to do in order to decide which kind of seat is right for you.

In addition, a low or mid-level bike is a good idea because they are a lower price. You don’t want to spend a ton of money on a new bike if you decide you don’t like the sport.

There are many accessories you might want to add to your bike like a water bottle holder, special handlebars and grips, and special pedals and more. Pedals are not the same on all bikes. For instance, for a rider that does tricks and rides standing quite a bit then you will want pedals that catch to the bottoms of your shoes better.

So before you make your purchase, ask other people that are into biking what they recommend. Go to bike shops and ask the owners or bike technicians what they feel is best for you. Bikes come in many different price ranges so there will be a bike for every budget. The more serious you plan on taking your biking, the more expensive the bike will be.
