It’s not my favorite thing to do, but I have to admit that having a sparkling clean kitchen does bring a certain amount of satisfaction. When the stainless is shining, the cupboards are organized and the floor is so clean I can eat from it, I pat myself on the back for a job well done, and pour myself a cold glass of white wine; I’ve earned it.

The dishes - The logical place to start is with the dishes. Most of us don’t want to do the dishes right after enjoying a good meal, but leaving them until leftover food has dried and hardened makes the job that much more unappealing. If you have a dishwasher, then there really is no excuse for not taking the five minutes necessary to load it up and turn it on.

The counters - To thoroughly clean your countertops, all that’s really needed is a clean cloth and a solution of water with a small amount of bleach. Spray and wipe, it’s that simple. If there are hardened bits of food or stubborn stains, try using a scrub brush or an old toothbrush. For hard to remove stains, let the water and bleach solution do the work for you. Spray the area and let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe. Don’t forget to rinse the entire surface with clean water.

Stone or granite counters may not be able to handle bleaches so check the manufacturer’s instructions if you’re unsure.

The oven - If you have a self cleaning oven, don’t use any type of cleaner. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for cleaning. For a conventional oven, use oven cleaner or a homemade spray solution of orange cleaner and baking soda. Apply the oven cleaner or spray and allow to remain overnight. Alternatively, place a shallow container with 1/2 cup of ammonia in the bottom of the oven, and let stand overnight. The following day, use a sponge with a scouring pad to remove the mess from the oven, and finish with a warm water rinse. If you don’t rinse properly, your next batch of cookies will taste like oven cleaner.

The stove - Now that the oven is clean, don’t forget the rest of the stove! Start at the top and work down. Use an all purpose cleaner and soft cloths, removing knobs if possible. Finish with a warm water rinse and dry thoroughly.

The sink - Stainless steel sinks are easy to clean with baking soda or a commercial scouring cleanser. Rinse well. Corian or porcelain sinks require a bit more care and you shouldn’t use abrasive cleansers. Rather, an all purpose liquid cleaner applied with a soft cloth will do the job nicely.

The fridge - I find that the easiest way to clean my fridge is to start by taking everything out. Go through all your food and throw out anything that’s past its due date, anything you know you’re not going to eat and anything that defies description. Remove the shelves, drawers and crispers (where possible) and clean the inside of the fridge with a solution of warm water and all purpose cleaner, rinse and wipe dry. Wash the shelves, drawers and crispers in warm water and dishwashing liquid, rinse and wipe dry. Don’t forget to clean the coils at the back of, and underneath, the fridge. They’re a natural gathering place for dust.

Floors, walls and cabinets can usually also be cleaned with a solution of warm water and all purpose cleaner.

Take rising gasoline prices, add in a compelling political race for United States President, sprinkle in a dash of technological advances and…voila, you have a major boost for green-focused automotive manufacturers and suppliers that will have long-range implications on the future of consumer transportation.

With gasoline prices at record levels, automotive technology occupied center stage in the US presidential campaign. One candidate proposed a $300 million prize for the inventor of a next-generation battery powerful enough for long-range electric cars. Another candidate suggested a $4 billion plan for development of plug-in hybrids with the stated goal of 1 million vehicles to be ready for sale by 2015. Regardless of one’s political affiliation, either of these plans looks like big steps are in the making.

Environmental concerns are playing a much bigger role with today’s eco-conscious consumers. The disciples of global warming are making a case about the long-range effects of gasoline and diesel-fueled engines, which produce carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and unburned hydrocarbons. And while automakers and their suppliers are busy researching and developing alternatives to the internal combustion engine, the reality is that it will take years before innovative, effective and non-cost-prohibitive solutions are ready for the marketplace.

Much of hybrid technology falls into one of three classes: full hybrid vehicles, medium hybrid vehicles and mild hybrid vehicles. Full hybrids propel vehicles without using any gasoline. An example would be a full EV (electrical vehicle) that is powered by a nickel-metal-hybrid or lithium-ion battery pack. Medium hybrids can use a combustion engine, an electric motor or a combination of the two to propel the vehicle. In mild hybrid vehicles, the combustion engine runs whenever the vehicle is in motion. Mild hybrids are available in dealerships today, and one of the more popular, and simplest, systems available is the start/stop system.

In 2007, vehicles began using the Belt-Alternator-Starter (BAS) systems, commonly known as start/stop systems. BAS hybrid systems deliver improved fuel economy, most notably in city driving where fuel economy usually suffers. Efficiency is improved by shutting off the engine when the vehicle is brought to a stop, minimizing engine idling. The engine restarts when the brake pedal is released. It also cuts off fuel to the engine during vehicle deceleration and captures vehicle kinetic energy during deceleration to help charge the advanced nickel metal hydride hybrid battery. This is referred to as regenerative braking.

Hybrid technology will continue to flourish until battery technology is able to catch up, but some automakers and environmentalists remain skeptical about other alternatives, such as the potential of hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles. “I don’t think we’ll ever have hydrogen-powered passenger fuel-cell vehicles because the alternatives are more attainable and more affordable,” says the founder of a California-based advocacy group that favors plug-in hybrid cars.

Hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles would have some advantages. As well as reducing fuel bills and emissions, hydrogen-powered cars could also help automakers by lowering material costs. A fuel-cell car has about 10% of the moving parts of a conventional vehicle. In a sign of hydrogen’s emergence as an automotive technology, one automaker recently moved fuel cells from its research and development division to its powertrain development business unit though automakers generally agree that fuel-cell powered vehicles are not likely to be in mass production in the near future.

Rising gas prices have given a boost to new technologies. A recent research report forecasts that motor vehicle technology would “change more significantly over the next five years than it has in the past 100.” Not coincidentally, it’s been about a hundred years since the Model T revolutionized the way cars were assembled and marketed, but a new day is dawning as today’s automakers are looking to reduce their reliance on the internal combustion engine by developing new hybrid, hydrogen and electric models.

Hybrid car sales shot up in 2008, unlike their traditional gasoline-engine counterparts. As of March 2008, 38,214 hybrid units were sold in the United States. That’s a 10 percent increase from the prior year, and - that figure doesn’t include the quantity of one major U.S. automaker’s hybrids because the manufacturer doesn’t separate these models from the rest of its sales statistics.

These hybrid sales are bright spots for the automotive market, which has seen an overall drop in sales by twelve percent in 2008. It’s no wonder - the average price of one barrel of crude oil shot up from $10.87 in 1998 to more than $100.00 in 2008. Many Americans simply don’t have the money to spend on that new car or, when they do, they’re making more fuel-efficient choices. Consumers are smart. They know what they want in their automobiles.

Availability of many of these hybrid models is not quite up to demand, however. Recent shortages in batteries - both nickel metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion - in newer hybrid models, have caused issues. A major U.S. automaker didn’t launch one of its new hybrid models on schedule because of the shortage, and certain manufacturers are simply running out of completed hybrids altogether.

But relief is around the corner for those wishing their gas tank would sip rather than guzzle. Automotive engineers and manufacturers are smart too, and are diligently working on solutions to these shortages and ways to improve hybrid technology. Below are three interesting innovations.

One, creative solutions may lie in technological innovations such as power box hybrid vehicle systems. Top manufacturers for the automotive industry produce self-contained hybrid drive system power boxes, including a traction inverter, DC/DC converter, battery pack, bus distribution center, battery management controller, safety circuit and thermal management subsystems. A drop-in solution for belt alternator starter (BAS), integrated starter generator (ISG) or full hybrid vehicle applications, the system operates over a wide range of voltages and power levels.

These power boxes have complete systems within single housing (easing installation), a simple package design that can fit behind the rear seat, and building-block technology, which increases flexibility, as well as reducing cost and complexity. They are also applicable across multiple platforms and powertrain configurations, as well as compatible with a variety of lithium-ion batteries manufactured globally.

Two, most manufacturers for the auto industry foresee the almost inevitable transition from NiMH batteries to lithium-ion hybrid vehicle battery pack systems. The best of them have reusable building-block technologies, can accommodate a range of voltages, have systems that maintain the health of the battery cells, and are applicable to mild hybrids, full hybrids or electric vehicles. These “packs” are what could make mass integration into the hybrid market of more efficient, more available batteries, possible very quickly.

Three, Integrated starter generator systems, which include smart braking systems, crankshaft-mounted starter generators, traction inverters, DC/DC converters, controllers and battery packs, are also out there. They provide quick, quiet stop/start, regenerative braking, torque smoothing, high power generation, launch-assist to reduce fuel consumption and emissions and battery management to increase battery life. With such a wide range of functions, an integrated starter generator system may become elemental in producing a vehicle with excellent fuel efficiency.

There is of course, more for the savvy. Such systems will also provide efficient on-board power production - two to five kilowatts - that power electronic features traditionally powered by belts and enable customer features. The engine on such models can also start five times faster and much more smoothly than their conventional counterparts.

Through these innovations, in-depth research - and a better supply of batteries - more hybrid lovers will be on the road in no time. Never fear - if you want it, manufacturers will find a way to get it.

Webster’s Dictionary defines a “hybrid” as something derived from heterogeneous sources, or composed of elements of different or incongruous kinds: a hybrid of the academic and business worlds for example. But, how does a hybrid automobile actually work? What is it that takes place while driving that can give you 20 or 30 more miles per gallon than the standard automobile?

Considering the definition above, a hybrid powered vehicle is a vehicle that is composed of two or more different and/or incongruous kinds of propulsion. In this way a hybrid powered vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to propel the vehicle. They operate by combining an electricity-run motor, a gasoline engine and maximum-powered batteries. These batteries provide energy for the electric motor and recharge when they recapture the energy that is usually lost when the car is decelerating or while coasting.

Regenerative breaking is the term for this process. In specific driving instances, the energy coming from the gas engine can also charge the battery simultaneously. Because of this, there is no need to plug in hybrid cars. Although hybrid powered vehicles have smaller engines than most conventional cars, an extra boost of horsepower comes from the electric motor. Therefore, hybrid cars rely less on the gasoline engine and as a result provide increased fuel economy and lower air pollution. HEVs also convert energy normally wasted when the car coasts or brakes into electricity that gets stored in the battery until utilized by the electric motor.

For our purposes, let’s classify hybrid cars into two categories to better understand how the battery functions and how the gas engine and the electric motor work when put together. There are two kinds of hybrids: the mild hybrids and the full hybrids. Each of these kinds have different approaches when combining the three components.

Mild Hybrid Cars and How They Work

In this type of hybrid car, the electric motor is only an assistant when it comes to operating the main propulsion. The electric motor provides additional power to assist the gas engine in accelerating, passing, or hill climbing. This allows a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine to be used. It is the gas engine, however that provides the major energy needed.

The motor depends on the gas engine to be able to operate. The electric motor is capable of eating up electricity from the batteries, or it can come up with energy for it, but the electric motor cannot do these functions at the same time. This type of sytem is used in two of Honda’s hybrid models, the Insight and the Civic hybrid.

Full Hybrid Cars Work and How They Work

The distinction of the full hybrid from the mild variety is that the electric motor and the gas engine can operate on its own. In most instances, the electric motor can function by itself in low speed, and once it picks up, the gasoline engine automatically takes over. Both the electric motor and the gas engine can function as a team, so to speak, if the car is in hard acceleration.

This combined effort provides a hybrid powered car the power that it requires for each different situation. Full hybrid cars can consume and build up electricity simultaneously. The full hybrid setup can be found in models such as the popular Toyota Prius, the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, and the Escape hybrid from Ford.

For example, you can look at the way the Toyota Prius works. The Prius runs on a technology called the Hybrid Synergy Drive, which involves a power split device to combine the energy of the electric motor and the gas engine. This technology, known as HSD, enables an effortless switching of power sources that the car’s driver would not notice during normal driving situations.

Unlike the other mild hybrid types, the Prius can be operated by the electric motor alone powered by the battery pack. As a result, a motorist can drive silently for short amounts of time. The Honda hybrids on this level cannot function just by the electric motor.

While speeding up a highway, the Prius utilizes the gas engine as its main operator, and can get assistance from the generator if needed. Then this hybrid car shuts off the gas engine automatically during stops. This contributes greatly in mileage improvement and produces less emission.

To sum up, the main goal of hybrid powered cars are to provide options for economy and efficiency amid the growing need for better forms of transport. Environmentally-conscious individuals would find heaven with hybrid cars. However, since they are just being introduced in the market, they can come at quite an expense. With increased sales numbers, it is hoped that more hybrid cars will become accessible to everyone in the future.
